Reviews Summary

A redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is on sale, improving on the successful formula the automaker has used for more than 25 years. The 2023 CR-V remains one of the roomiest compact crossover SUVs in its class, and it get an overdue infusion of new infotainment systems and safety features that bring it up to par with its many rivals. In addition, with the 2023 CR-V, Honda places greater emphasis on electrification with a next-generation hybrid powertrain that comes standard in half the lineup. However, in this review, we’ll focus on the 2023 Honda CR-V EX and EX-L trims with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the Honda CR-V Hybrid models.

Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year–and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$50k Mercedes-Benz.

Look and feel

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V presented a more refined and slightly aggressive appearance with its blunt nose, elongated hood, and extended wheelbase, marking a departure from the more expressive design of its predecessor. While the styling was more conservative, it was expected to age gracefully. Both the CR-V EX and EX-L models shared exterior features like 18-inch alloy wheels and dark-tinted rear privacy glass, but the EX-L distinguished itself with leather-wrapped seats and a more sophisticated interior. The dashboard, inspired by the latest Civic, featured metal mesh trim that elegantly divided the upper and lower sections, contributing to a sense of quality and simplicity. The CR-V EX-L offered additional amenities such as a larger touchscreen infotainment system, power-adjustable front passenger seat, and parking sensors, enhancing the overall driving experience.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC maintained a familiar design to appease its loyal customer base, with subtle updates like new taillights and repositioned door handles. The headlights were narrower and more aggressive, while the rear design featured a trim piece connecting the taillights. The GLC Coupe retained its distinctive fastback profile, and the grille differentiated the AMG models from the GLC 300 variants. Inside, the GLC exuded luxury with its two-tone leather upholstery, optional wood-and-metal dash treatment, and an abundance of screens and controls. The interior was gadget-heavy, reflecting Mercedes' commitment to technology and comfort, making it a class leader for those who appreciated a tech-forward environment.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. This engine, carried over from the previous generation, was paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), which, while efficient, was known for its droning noise during hard acceleration. Despite this, the CR-V excelled in ride and handling, with a well-tuned suspension, steering, and brakes that provided a satisfying driving experience. The CR-V's fuel economy was impressive, achieving an average of 29.1 mpg in combined driving, according to the EPA.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from AMG, delivering a robust 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation's V6. The engine was complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, enhancing performance. The GLC 300, with its 255 horsepower, offered a more modest option. The GLC 43 utilized an AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed transmission, providing faster shifts and better torque handling, though it resulted in rougher shifts. The performance suspension, while improved, still offered a firmer ride, making it less suitable for daily commuting but ideal for enthusiasts seeking sporty handling.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V boasted a spacious interior, with the second row offering more room than the first. The driver's seat, though adjustable, felt low, giving the CR-V a car-like feel. Visibility was excellent, and the seats provided comfort, though ventilated front and heated rear seats were unavailable. The CR-V excelled in storage, with a large center armrest bin and various storage compartments. The cargo area offered 39.3 cubic feet of space, expandable to 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled toward the driver. The front seats offered standard heat and memory functions, with optional ventilation and heated rear seats. The GLC SUV provided 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 59.3 cubic feet, while the Coupe offered less space but maintained a practical hatchback-like configuration. The power-folding rear seats added convenience, though the cargo capacity was not class-leading.

Technology

2023 Honda CR-V

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V featured a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the EX trim, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX-L trim upgraded to a 9-inch touchscreen with additional features like wireless charging and an upgraded sound system. However, the technology package was not as comprehensive as some competitors, lacking premium sound and navigation options unless opting for the top-tier Sport Touring Hybrid.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC showcased a prominent 11.9-inch touchscreen running the MBUX infotainment system, known for its effective voice command capabilities. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with higher trims offering navigation, a Burmester sound system, and augmented reality navigation. The GLC's tech package was extensive, with options like an Advanced USB package, enhancing connectivity and convenience.

Safety

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V improved its driver-assist systems with the Honda Sensing suite, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. New features like Traffic Jam Assist and a driver monitoring system were added, though the lane-centering assist could be improved. The CR-V's body structure and airbag designs aimed to enhance crash protection, though official safety ratings were pending.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, with standard features like active brake assist and Pre-Safe, which prepared the vehicle for an imminent collision. Optional safety features required the Driver Assistance Package, adding adaptive cruise control and active lane-keeping assist. The GLC's safety credentials were strong, though NHTSA ratings were not yet available.
