Reviews Summary

The Trax is the cheapest new car Chevy sells in the United States. It takes the place of compact sedans and hatchbacks in the Bowtie brand’s lineup, while competing with entry-level crossover SUVs such as the Hyundai Venue and the Nissan Kicks. The current Trax was introduced for the 2024 model year, and for 2026 the only changes are two new exterior color options. White Sands is available with Activ and RS models, while Apex Red is available with RS, LS, and LT models.

Verdict: Blending elements of compact cars and crossover SUVs, the Trax hits a sweet spot of utility and affordability. It’s also pleasant to drive and offers impressive infotainment tech, but a lack of solid safety ratings and the unavailability of all-wheel drive are the tradeoffs.

Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

2026 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax emerged as a more stylish and appealing option compared to its predecessor. It adopted car-like proportions while maintaining SUV styling elements, which gave it a unique personality. The Blazer-like headlights, wide grille, and tall front end contributed to its SUV toughness, while the sleek side profile and upward arc of the rear side windows added a touch of elegance. The Trax lineup included various trims, each with distinct features such as different wheel sizes and finishes, black Chevy Bowtie badges, and unique bumpers. Inside, the Trax offered a basic yet thoughtfully designed interior with contrasting trim and a layout reminiscent of the Corvette. Despite its entry-level status, the Trax managed to deliver a visually appealing cabin with practical features.

The 2026 Lexus TX, on the other hand, offered a more luxurious experience with a variety of trim levels and powertrain options. The 550h+ plug-in hybrid stood out with its standard panoramic glass roof and striking Matador Red Mica paint. The exterior design retained the large spindle grille and sharp bi-LED headlights, while the rear featured LED lighting and a small roof spoiler. Inside, the TX provided spacious seating, especially in the third row, with features like multi-zone climate control, heated and cooled seats, and ambient lighting. However, the overall material quality fell short of luxury standards, with basic plastics scattered throughout. The redesigned door handles were a unique touch, but some might have preferred more attention to detail in other areas of the cabin.

Performance

2026 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax was powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, offered a confident driving experience. Despite its small size, the Trax accelerated eagerly and maintained stability at higher speeds. The conventional automatic transmission contributed to its drivability, providing smoother shifts compared to a CVT. While not designed for performance, the Trax handled twisty roads with poise, offering a stable and car-like feel. The suspension effectively absorbed bumps, ensuring a comfortable ride, while active noise cancellation enhanced cabin refinement.

In contrast, the 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid delivered a more powerful performance with its 3.5-liter V6 engine and hybrid system, generating 404 horsepower. The TX offered multiple drive modes, including electric-only and hybrid options, allowing drivers to tailor their experience. The ride was smooth and quiet, with seamless transitions between gas and electric power. The suspension absorbed road imperfections effortlessly, making it ideal for long journeys. The all-wheel-drive system provided excellent traction, and the Trail Mode enhanced performance on slippery surfaces. While the TX wasn't designed for sporty driving, it offered a comfortable and refined ride.

Form and function

2026 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax provided competitive interior space for a small crossover, with ample headroom and rear-seat legroom. It offered 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 54.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The tall seating position improved visibility, and large exterior mirrors compensated for limited rear visibility. The front seats were positioned inboard, allowing for large door pockets and adequate cup holders. However, the wireless device charger struggled to hold phones in place.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ excelled in interior space, offering a spacious third row with recline function and ample headroom. The second row featured captain's chairs with a removable center console, while the front seats provided roominess but lacked thigh support. The climate controls were mostly on the screen, but physical dials for temperature adjustments were a welcome touch. The TX offered excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 97 cubic feet with all seats folded. The available kick sensor in the liftgate added convenience, and the TX could tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Technology

2026 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a four-speaker audio system on the base model. Higher trims featured an 11-inch touchscreen, an all-digital 8-inch instrument cluster, and a six-speaker sound system. The digital cluster provided clear information, while the touchscreen had a sensible layout. However, the angled screen made it difficult for the front passenger to use, and the volume knob was awkwardly positioned.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch color touchscreen with quick response times, but some features lacked polish. The steering wheel buttons controlled various functions but were not labeled, leading to confusion. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, but connectivity issues occasionally arose. The backup camera offered a clear view, and the available Advanced Park system handled parking duties. The TX also provided ample charging options, with seven USB ports and wireless charging.

Safety

2026 Chevrolet Trax

4/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offered standard driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning. Higher trims had additional options like adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring. The Teen Driver monitoring system was a valuable feature for parents. However, safety ratings were lacking, with the IIHS giving the Trax a "Poor" rating in the moderate overlap front crash test.

The 2026 Lexus TX came with Safety System+ 3.0, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. The adaptive cruise control worked well, though it was initially confusing to set up. The TX 350 and 500h received five-star ratings from the NHTSA, while the TX earned "Good" ratings in several IIHS tests.
