2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the upcoming CX-90, and the rumored CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s lineup for much longer.

2024 Chevrolet Trax Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
Mazda's CX-5 impresses with two engine options. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers a competitive 187 hp, while the available turbocharged 2.5-liter generates an impressive 256 hp. In contrast, the 2024 Trax opts for a smaller 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 hp. Despite its smaller size, the Trax proves capable with minimal turbo lag and nimble handling.
Form and function

2023 Mazda CX-5

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
In terms of form and function, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 and the 2024 Chevrolet Trax offer different strengths and weaknesses. While the 2023 Mazda CX-5 received praise for its comfortable and supportive front seats, there are notable drawbacks in terms of technology, storage space, rear-seat room, and cargo capacity. Despite featuring top-notch materials and upscale design elements, the CX-5's technology interface, Mazda Connect, has been criticized for its complexity and lack of user-friendliness. Additionally, the CX-5 falls short in terms of storage space, rear-seat legroom, and cargo capacity compared to some competitors in its class. Behind the rear seat, the CX-5 provides 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which increases to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. While these figures are reasonable, they may not match the storage needs of all consumers, especially those who prioritize cargo space. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax offers notable improvements in interior space and cargo capacity compared to its predecessor. The redesigned Trax boasts increased rear-seat legroom and a larger cargo area, addressing some of the previous model's shortcomings. With 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 54.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, the Trax provides ample room for luggage and other cargo. This represents a 12% increase in cargo capacity compared to the previous model, making it more versatile and accommodating for daily use and road trips alike.
Technology

3/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

While Mazda Connect struggles to impress, the Trax's upgraded infotainment system earns accolades. The Trax leads the way in user-friendly technology, with its larger touchscreens and wireless connectivity options making every drive enjoyable and convenient.
Safety

2023 Mazda CX-5

10/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
Mazda's commitment to safety shines through with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, earning top ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Trax matches this with standard advanced safety tech.
