Reviews SummaryThe Trax is the cheapest new car Chevy sells in the United States. It takes the place of compact sedans and hatchbacks in the Bowtie brand’s lineup, while competing with entry-level crossover SUVs such as the Hyundai Venue and the Nissan Kicks. The current Trax was introduced for the 2024 model year, and for 2026 the only changes are two new exterior color options. White Sands is available with Activ and RS models, while Apex Red is available with RS, LS, and LT models. Verdict: Blending elements of compact cars and crossover SUVs, the Trax hits a sweet spot of utility and affordability. It’s also pleasant to drive and offers impressive infotainment tech, but a lack of solid safety ratings and the unavailability of all-wheel drive are the tradeoffs.
Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax emerged as a more stylish and appealing option compared to its predecessor, which was known for being a basic crossover. With its second-generation model, the Trax adopted car-like proportions, sharing its platform with the Buick Envista, to attract customers who missed the discontinued Cruze and Sonic models. The design incorporated SUV styling elements, such as Blazer-like headlights, a wide grille, and a tall front end, giving it a robust appearance. The vehicle's sides featured chunky wheel arches and a pronounced rib in the doors, while the laid-back windshield and upward arc of the rear side windows contributed to a sleeker look. The Trax's wide stance and imposing grille added a touch of SUV toughness to its overall design.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue, classified as a crossover SUV, resembled a tall hatchback more than a traditional SUV. Its design leaned towards a European runabout, with a small and narrow appearance. The upright windshield and bluff nose gave it an SUV-like look, complemented by standard roof rails. The Venue's high nose was flanked by lower headlights and high-set daytime running lights, while a satin metallic lower fascia housed the air intake. Black wheel flares around the small wheels and black rocker panels added to its SUV cues. Inside, the Venue's design was simple and functional, featuring a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad on the dash. Body-color trim around the air vents and shifter brought some exterior flair into the cabin.

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax was equipped with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, offered more power than the Hyundai Venue's naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which delivered 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The Trax's turbocharged engine provided confident acceleration and maintained power at higher speeds without feeling overstressed. Its conventional geared automatic transmission contributed to better drivability compared to a CVT, offering smoother power application.
In contrast, the Hyundai Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time ranging from 8.5 to 8.8 seconds. Its lightweight design, weighing 2,738 pounds, helped it feel peppy in city traffic, but the CVT struggled to provide quick acceleration at highway speeds. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size and low weight, making it easy to maneuver in traffic and fit into tight parking spots. However, the Venue's engine drone and lack of sound deadening detracted from the overall driving experience.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offered competitive interior space, with headroom comparable to the Hyundai Kona and Subaru Crosstrek. It provided more rear-seat legroom than the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, making it a practical choice for passengers. The Trax's cargo space was also commendable, with 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The tall seating position facilitated easy ingress and egress, while large exterior mirrors compensated for limited rear visibility. The interior featured large door pockets and cup holders, although the wireless device charger struggled to hold phones in place.
The Hyundai Venue's interior featured cloth and H-Tex seats with manual adjustments, offering decent comfort. However, legroom was limited for taller occupants, and the rear seat could only accommodate two adults comfortably. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 31.9 cubic feet with the seats folded. The lack of sound deadening was evident, with hard black plastic dominating the interior surfaces.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims featured an 11-inch touchscreen, an all-digital 8-inch instrument cluster, and a six-speaker sound system. The digital cluster was easy to read, and the touchscreen had a sensible layout, although it was angled toward the driver, making it less accessible for the front passenger.
The Hyundai Venue featured a simple 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment functions, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While it lacked features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, it provided essential connectivity options. The audio system was a basic six-speaker unit, with no premium upgrade available. The digital instrument cluster displayed limited information and was not programmable.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offered standard driver-assist features such as automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning. Higher trims included adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring. However, the Trax received a "Poor" rating in the IIHS moderate overlap front crash test, with no NHTSA ratings available at the time.
The Hyundai Venue came with standard safety features like forward-collision warning and lane-keep assist. Blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The Venue received a four-star rating from the NHTSA, with limited IIHS ratings available. Its headlights received "Acceptable" or "Marginal" ratings, depending on the trim.
