2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the upcoming CX-90, and the rumored CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s lineup for much longer.

2024 Mazda CX-50 Reviews Summary

Verdict: Now in its second model year, the 2024 Mazda CX-50 sits on the more rugged end of the compact crossover SUV spectrum. It’s close in size to the Mazda CX-5, but is aimed at more outdoorsy customers. Those customers have plenty of other choices, though, including popular and well-established nameplates like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. The CX-50 doesn’t offend, but it doesn’t charm either.

Look and feel

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-50

8/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5, despite its age, remained a strong contender in the compact crossover SUV market. It was praised for its stylish design and high-quality materials, giving it a feel akin to a small luxury SUV. The available turbocharged engine provided impressive power, and the model boasted a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. However, its small back seat, limited cargo space, and frustrating infotainment system were potential drawbacks. Mazda's decision to eventually phase out the CX-5 was not due to its performance but rather a strategic move to transition to the redesigned and renamed CX-50. This approach aimed to ease loyal customers into the new model, much like Infiniti's past rebranding efforts.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 was introduced as a more rugged counterpart to the CX-5, featuring a fresher design with broader proportions and distinctive styling elements. It was lower, wider, and longer than the CX-5, with a stretched wheelbase. The CX-50 was available in eight trim levels, offering a range of features and options. The Meridian Edition, in particular, emphasized an active-lifestyle image with all-terrain tires and additional rugged styling cues. However, the CX-50's off-road capabilities were not significantly enhanced beyond other trim levels. The interior design was pleasing, with quality materials and a sensible layout, though it fell short of Mazda's upscale aspirations.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-50

5/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options: a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged version delivering up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The turbocharged engine provided a thrilling driving experience, with responsive performance and a firm, connected ride quality. The CX-5's updates in structural rigidity, suspension, and transmission contributed to its sporty driving dynamics, making it a delight on winding roads.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 shared its powertrains with the CX-5, offering a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged version with up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The CX-50 featured a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD, with additional driving modes including Towing on turbo models. While the CX-50 was a competent daily driver, it lacked the engaging driving dynamics of the CX-5. The Meridian Edition's all-terrain tires added noise and reduced grip, impacting the overall driving experience.

Form and function

2024 Mazda CX-50

7/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 featured improved front seats for enhanced comfort and support, with power adjustments and heated options available on higher trims. The interior boasted high-quality materials, including Nappa leather on the Signature trim. However, the CX-5's technology, storage, and rear-seat space were limited. The cargo area offered 30.9 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 59.3 cubic feet with them folded, which was less than many rivals.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 provided similar passenger space to the CX-5, with slightly more legroom but less headroom. It offered 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 56.3 cubic feet with them folded. While the CX-50 had a bit more cargo space with the second row up, it still trailed most competitors. The available power liftgate improved cargo access, but the interior materials and layout were more suited to less-active lifestyles.

2024 Mazda CX-50

7/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's Mazda Connect infotainment system featured a 10.25-inch display with sophisticated graphics but was criticized for its awkward controls and lack of a voice recognition system. The system required memorization and focus, making it distracting to use while driving. Despite these issues, it offered Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose audio system on higher trims. The test vehicle also included a front-facing camera and a surround-view camera system.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 came with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen controlled by a rotary controller and buttons. While the interface required adjustment, it provided physical feedback and was easier to use without taking eyes off the road. The system felt dated, with basic functions and plain graphics, but it included wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a Bose audio system on higher trims. The CX-50's infotainment was suitable for buyers who preferred simplicity over excessive tech.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA. It featured a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies under the i-Activsense banner, with additional features on higher trims. The CX-5's safety systems operated smoothly and accurately, enhancing the overall driving experience. However, it lacked a warning for driving without headlights at night, a common issue with the model.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 received a 2023 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, with top scores in crash tests and front-crash prevention. However, it scored lower in the nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian test and had average standard headlights. The NHTSA ratings were incomplete, but the CX-50 had a five-star frontal crash-test rating. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, with additional options available.
