2023 Kia Carnival Reviews SummaryOver the holidays of 2022, we used the 2023 Kia Carnival to drive all over the Los Angeles area for gatherings of family and friends. Whenever we slid open a side door to load or unload passengers, a common question was: “So, is this a minivan or an SUV?” If you work in Kia’s marketing department, the Carnival is neither. The company calls it a multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV. But if you’re a typical consumer, this stylish Kia is a minivan because it has sliding doors and does not offer all-wheel drive or a lifted suspension.
2023 Lexus RX Reviews SummaryIf you scrub electric-only Teslas from the list, the Lexus RX is the best-selling luxury vehicle in America. The model first went on sale about 25 years ago, and it has cultivated a loyal following with people who aspire to own a reliable, refined, safe, and stylish luxury crossover SUV. To say the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX represents the mother of all risk/reward scenarios is an understatement. But based on a day driving numerous versions of the new 2023 RX, we’d say Lexus has struck the right balance with its latest two-row midsize SUV.

The 2023 Kia Carnival presented a unique blend of style and functionality, setting itself apart from the typical minivan. It featured a distinctive design with high-tech lighting, an intricate grille, and decorative roof pillar trim, which contributed to its upscale image. The SX Prestige trim, in particular, offered a sophisticated interior with dual instrumentation and infotainment screens, dual power sunroofs, and quality materials that enhanced the overall feel of the vehicle. Despite its minivan classification, the Carnival's design and features made it an attractive option for those seeking a stylish and tech-savvy family vehicle.
In contrast, the 2023 Lexus RX maintained its recognizable luxury SUV identity while introducing a modernized design. The RX was shorter in height, broader in width, and longer in wheelbase compared to its predecessor, giving it a more compact appearance. The signature spindle-style grille, upswept body sides, and light-blade taillight design contributed to its fresh yet familiar look. Inside, the RX offered a modern interior with fewer buttons, digital instrumentation, and a choice of touchscreen displays. The use of high-quality materials and thoughtful design elements ensured that the RX remained a sophisticated and comfortable choice for luxury SUV buyers.

The 2023 Kia Carnival was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This front-wheel-drive minivan offered a satisfying driving experience with its various driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Smart, and Sport. Despite its lack of all-wheel drive and hybrid options, the Carnival's V6 engine provided ample power, even when fully loaded with passengers. However, the brakes showed signs of fading during a mountain descent, although they performed well in other driving conditions. The Carnival's ride quality varied depending on the load, with a firm and sporty feel when lightly loaded and a softer ride when fully occupied.
The 2023 Lexus RX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine offered better torque and fuel economy compared to the previous V6, although it lacked the same level of refinement. The RX 350 Luxury trim displayed occasional torque steer and excess body motion, while the F Sport Handling trim, with its adaptive damping suspension, provided a more composed and secure ride. The RX 350 AWD accelerated to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and the FWD version in 7.5 seconds, with fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg and 25 mpg, respectively.
The 2023 Kia Carnival offered a spacious and versatile interior, with a design that mimicked SUVs rather than traditional minivans. It featured three types of upholstery, with genuine leather available in the SX Prestige trim. The Carnival's three-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and smart sliding doors added to its appeal. However, the VIP Lounge Seats in the SX Prestige trim limited cargo capacity to 86.9 cubic feet and made third-row access challenging. Without these seats, the Carnival offered a maximum cargo space of 145.1 cubic feet, surpassing even the Chevrolet Suburban.
The 2023 Lexus RX provided a comfortable and luxurious interior, with the RX 350 Luxury trim offering premium leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and a sophisticated design. The F Sport Handling trim featured sportier elements, such as bolstered seats and Dark Graphite trim. The RX's back seat was roomy and supportive, although taller passengers might find headroom tight. Cargo space improved over the previous model, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 46.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, though still not generous for the segment.
The 2023 Kia Carnival SX Prestige boasted a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment system, offering impressive graphics and a range of features, including Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Kia Connect services. However, the Bose audio system was underwhelming, and the native voice recognition system had limitations. Additional tech features included Quiet Mode, Passenger Talk, and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, though teenagers preferred their own devices.
The 2023 Lexus RX introduced the new Lexus Interface infotainment system, available with a 9.8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen display. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and various connected services. The Intelligent Assistant provided natural voice recognition, although it occasionally returned inaccurate results. The RX also offered user profiles, streaming capabilities, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. However, the inability to view multiple data panels simultaneously was a drawback.
The 2023 Kia Carnival came equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and collision avoidance systems, with features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring standard across all trims. The rear-seat reminder system and Safe Exit System added unique safety elements. The EX trim introduced Junction Turning Detection and Highway Driving Assist, while the SX trim added a surround-view camera and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Carnival received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS for 2022, but NHTSA crash tests were pending.
The 2023 Lexus RX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering advanced driving assistance systems, including motorcycle detection, evasive steering assistance, and intersection turn assistance. New semi-autonomous technologies like Proactive Driving Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and Advanced Park Assist debuted in the RX. While LSS+ 3.0 was impressive, issues with HUD visibility and curve-speed reduction technology were noted. The driver monitoring system also required attention to avoid false alerts.
