2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

2024 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

The Acura MDX is a mainstay of the luxury SUV segment, and it covers the bases remarkably well. Its well-rounded nature is perhaps because it shares a platform with the Honda Pilot (another fantastic family hauler) but for that same reason, it doesn’t offer the same cachet as a BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE. Whether you are on a road trip or heading to work, the MDX is comfortable, refined, and has space for the family and their gear. For 2024, there’s a new Type-S trim level, bringing a new level of performance to the three-row, seven-passenger midsize luxury SUV. But as we’ll get into in a bit, the MDX is held back by a maddening infotainment system that could truly be a sticking point to overshadow all other positive attributes.

Verdict: The MDX is a beautiful, safe, and cost-effective luxury SUV, and the new Type-S trim level delivers a higher level of performance. However, it doesn’t offer as much space as some of its competitors, and we wouldn’t recommend it to anyone easily frustrated by finnicky tech interfaces.

Look and feel

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 Acura MDX

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was noted for its sharp, angular style, which, while unique, remained conventional enough to blend in with other vehicles in its class. The front featured the signature Acura grille, which, after years of evolution, seemed to be showing its age. Sleek wraparound headlights and deep creases in the bodywork gave the RDX a sporty and aggressive look. The side profile was accentuated by a distinctive character line, suggesting forward movement even when stationary. The rear, however, was more conventional, resembling many other small SUVs.

Inside, the RDX took a different approach from many of its rivals by favoring a vertical dashboard layout. The center stack of controls flowed into the center console, dominated by gear-selector buttons and a drive-mode dial, emphasizing performance. The 10.2-inch infotainment display sat atop the dash, while the instrument panel featured a digital center display flanked by analog gauges. The interior, though not as modern as some competitors, offered a familiar feel for those averse to the latest glass cockpit designs.

The 2024 Acura MDX, on the other hand, impressed with its modern and refined presence. The large shield grille was flanked by rakish headlights and accented by intake vents, while the lower bumper area added to its contemporary look. Inside, the MDX was high-tech but busy, with a bevy of controls in the center console that could be overwhelming. The MDX was available in several trims, including the Technology, A-Spec, and Advance Packages, as well as the Type-S and Type-S Advance. Standard features included tri-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. The Type-S Advance package added a top-end 26-speaker ELS sound system and massaging front seats, enhancing comfort and luxury.

Performance

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 Acura MDX

9/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and came standard with front-wheel drive, while Acura's "super-handling all-wheel drive" (SH-AWD) was available on all models and standard in top trims. The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, offering immediate throttle response and a pleasing engine sound. The transmission was praised for its gear selection, and the brake pedal provided reassuring firmness. The RDX's handling inspired confidence, with well-managed body roll and abundant traction from the advanced AWD system. It offered a sporty yet comfortable ride, smoothing over road imperfections with ease.

The 2024 Acura MDX featured a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The Type-S variant came with a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, delivering 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Power was managed by a 10-speed automatic transmission, with the option of Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive System. The Type-S Advance model offered strong acceleration and quick throttle delivery, with Brembo performance brakes and an adaptive air suspension for a comfortable ride. The MDX's Integrated Dynamics System included multiple drive modes, enhancing its versatility. Despite its size, the MDX handled corners well, and its towing capacity reached up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Form and function

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2024 Acura MDX

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX provided ample space in the front seats, with additional power adjustments in top trims. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults comfortably, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. The cabin felt open and airy, thanks to a large panoramic sunroof. Cargo space was generous, with up to 31.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 79.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The RDX offered various storage options for smaller items, though the center stack's design could be more space-efficient.

The 2024 Acura MDX came standard with three rows of seating, with the first two rows offering comfort and support. The third row was smaller, best suited for children. Cargo space measured 16.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 71.4 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The MDX featured a power liftgate, with a hands-free option available. The Type-S Advance model included a second-row bench with a fold-down center console and integrated cupholders. While the center console offered ample storage, the center stack of controls was criticized for its complexity and space usage.

Technology

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

2024 Acura MDX

6/10

The 2023 Acura RDX's infotainment system was controlled by a touchpad, which proved challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen, adding to the difficulty. However, the system improved with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for easier operation. The RDX came standard with a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app. The top A-Spec Advanced trim featured a 16-speaker ELS audio system with excellent sound quality.

The 2024 Acura MDX's infotainment system was similarly criticized for its clumsy interface. The 12.3-inch display was controlled by a touchpad, which was unintuitive. Despite this, the MDX offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa integration, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The center console cleverly housed charging ports, and the touchpad was paired with a leather handrest. However, the system's complexity detracted from the overall experience, making it less appealing compared to competitors like the Genesis GV80.
