The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan stood out among its competitors with a design that was both conservative and timeless. Its refreshed front styling aligned it with Volkswagen’s larger models, featuring a new grille, standard LED headlights, and redesigned aluminum wheels. The SEL R-Line trim, in particular, boasted a sportier look with blacked-out elements and a striking Atlantic Blue Metallic paint option. Inside, the Tiguan SEL R-Line offered a luxurious cabin with leather upholstery, new technology, and ambient lighting, although the lower half of the cabin revealed its mass-market roots with hard plastic materials.

In contrast, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, while not a visual stunner, offered a practical and efficient package. The minivan's design was more rounded and flowing, which some might find dated compared to the sharper lines of modern vehicles. Despite this, the interior was well-appointed with black Nappa leather and a host of comfort features. The Pacifica Hybrid's design didn't shy away from its minivan identity, focusing instead on functionality and efficiency, making it a unique offering in the market.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan retained its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This power was managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the option of VW’s 4Motion AWD system. The Tiguan offered various driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, and Individual, with additional settings for AWD models. Despite its decent torque, the Tiguan experienced some turbo lag, which could be a concern in certain driving situations. Fuel economy was modest, with an EPA rating of 24 mpg combined for the AWD R-Line model, and our test drive yielded a similar 24.7 mpg. The Tiguan's ride and handling were competent for everyday driving, but it lacked the excitement for more spirited driving.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, on the other hand, featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a 3.6-liter V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system, delivering a total of 260 horsepower. The Pacifica Hybrid could travel up to 32 miles on electric power alone, making it ideal for short commutes and errands. The transition between electric and gasoline power was seamless, and the regenerative braking system helped recharge the battery. During our test, the Pacifica Hybrid achieved an impressive 37.1 mpg on a mixed driving loop. While the Pacifica Hybrid excelled in efficiency, its driving dynamics were less engaging, with light steering, unremarkable brakes, and a somewhat unnatural ride quality due to the low-mounted battery.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan offered a spacious interior, comparable to smaller midsize SUVs. The SEL R-Line trim provided comfortable leather seats with power adjustments, heating, and ventilation. The second row was roomy enough for adults and children alike, with rear air conditioning vents and USB charging ports. Cargo space was generous, with 37.6 cubic feet behind the second row and up to 73.4 cubic feet with the seats folded down. However, the touch controls on the steering wheel and dashboard were less intuitive than traditional buttons.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, with three rows of comfortable seating and ample cargo space. The front seats were heated and ventilated, and the triple-zone climate control kept the cabin cool. Storage solutions were plentiful, including a large floor tray and multiple bins. The second-row seats were more comfortable than the standard Pacifica's Stow n’ Go seats but required removal to maximize cargo space. The third row was spacious enough for adults, and the cargo area offered 32.3 cubic feet behind the seats, expanding to 87.5 cubic feet with the third row folded and up to 140.5 cubic feet with the second row removed.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan came with standard digital instrumentation, with the SEL R-Line featuring a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro. The MIB3 infotainment system, available on all but the base trim, included an 8-inch touchscreen, Car-Net connected services, and smartphone mirroring. However, the natural voice recognition feature required an additional subscription and was not active during our test. The Tiguan also offered a Park Assist system for autonomous parking, standard on the SEL R-Line.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The system allowed for multiple user profiles and simultaneous Bluetooth pairing. The available FamCam overhead camera system was a useful feature for parents. However, the voice recognition technology was inconsistent. The Pacifica Hybrid also offered a 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and an Amazon Fire TV rear-seat entertainment system, though our test passengers preferred their own devices. The surround-view camera system and parking assist were standard on higher trims.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan came with standard Front Assist and Side Assist, and the IQ Drive system included Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist could bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver became unresponsive. The 2021 Tiguan earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, and the 2022 model's improvements could enhance this rating.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasted a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system. It offered adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist, though the adaptive cruise control needed refinement.
