2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

Look and feel

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 underwent subtle yet significant exterior updates, including new LED headlights and taillights, redesigned bumpers, a revised grille, and a fresh rear liftgate. These changes aimed to enhance its premium appeal, especially in the top-tier Signature trim, which featured body-color lower exterior trim. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. The new seats provided improved comfort, addressing previous complaints about the seating position. However, the introduction of a more complex trim lineup replaced the familiar structure, offering choices between the CX-5 2.5 S and the turbocharged 2.5 Turbo.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, complemented by a stately 16-foot length. The Prestige trim boasted 22-inch alloy wheels, enhancing its elegant appearance. The interior continued the dark green theme with quilted leather seats, a split dash with thin air vents, and a center console featuring three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. While the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat detached, the spacious and luxurious interior, complete with a suede headliner and panoramic glass roof, provided a comfortable and upscale environment.

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options: the 2.5 S with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and the 2.5 Turbo, which delivered 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium gas. Both engines were paired with a revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The CX-5's fuel economy was competitive, with the 2.5 S achieving 26 mpg in combined driving, while the 2.5 Turbo managed 24 mpg. The 2022 model featured improved driving dynamics, reduced noise, and enhanced ride quality, making it a compelling alternative to entry-level luxury SUVs.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and a turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 horsepower. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the GV80 wasn't the quickest in its class, it excelled in highway driving, thanks to smooth power delivery and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted to road conditions. The active noise cancellation further enhanced the quiet and comfortable ride, making it an ideal choice for long commutes.

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, more comfortable seats and a sportier driving position. The interior featured leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats. However, the back seat remained snug, and the control layout of the Mazda Connect infotainment system was a source of frustration. Cargo space was adequate, with 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 59.3 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a luxurious interior with heated and ventilated front and rear seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and a tri-zone climate control system. The optional third row provided limited legroom, suitable for children. The GV80 boasted a generous cargo space of 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. The proximity key, digital key, and advanced audio system added to the convenience and comfort of the GV80.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system, which lacked a touchscreen interface and natural voice recognition. Instead, users relied on center console and steering wheel controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a three-year trial of Mazda Connected Services. The 10-speaker Bose premium sound system was available from the 2.5 S Premium trim, providing decent audio quality.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 came equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the dial offered a tactile experience. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, though not wirelessly. The GV80 featured remote smart parking assist, allowing the car to maneuver in and out of tight spaces without the driver inside. Wireless charging and multiple USB ports ensured devices stayed powered.
