2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews SummaryHyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design. The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of. The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.
2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews SummaryThe 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a distinctive design that set it apart from its peers, even as it borrowed some styling cues from other Genesis models. Its quad LED strip headlights and taillights, along with a prominent shield-shaped grille, were signature elements. The GV70's sloping roofline and ribbed detailing added a muscular touch, blending SUV bulk with sleek, car-like aesthetics. The Sport Prestige variant further enhanced its character with unique styling features, including a model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels with a web pattern, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by an airplane wing's cross-section, featuring an elliptical theme with minimalistic design elements. The cabin offered a variety of color options and luxurious materials, such as Nappa leather upholstery with suede inserts, although base models came with leatherette seats.
In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue maintained a more conservative design approach, focusing on proper proportions and rugged SUV detailing. The Rogue's lineup included various trim levels, with the Platinum trim offering upscale features like diamond-pattern leather seats and soft-touch surfaces. The test vehicle came equipped with a range of amenities, including a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, triple-zone automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel. While the Rogue's interior was generally comfortable, the rear seat's low-mounted cushion and diamond-shaped pleats detracted from its overall comfort. The Rogue's design emphasized practicality, with rear doors opening to nearly 90 degrees and ample storage space, although some storage areas lacked lining, potentially causing noise and vibration.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV70's sporty features included a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, although these features seemed more suited to a sporty coupe than a luxury SUV. The Sport+ drive mode added aggression to the driving experience, but the GV70's chassis and steering lacked the sharpness of some competitors. While the GV70 excelled in highway cruising, its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.
The 2023 Nissan Rogue featured a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with a variable compression design, producing 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Rogue offered front-wheel drive as standard, with optional AWD. The Rogue's powertrain provided responsive performance in urban settings, but it lacked passing power on the highway. The engine's unusual note and vibration through the accelerator pedal might have been off-putting to some drivers. The Rogue's fuel economy fell short of expectations, averaging 28.9 mpg in combined driving. The SUV's ride quality was generally composed, with Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control enhancing cornering and ride comfort. However, the steering felt lifeless, and the all-season tires provided modest grip.
The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment, with front-seat headroom comparable to a Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and back-seat headroom similar to a BMW X3. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded. The daring interior design compromised storage space, with limited room in the center console and door pockets. The Sport Prestige test car featured heavily bolstered front seats with heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, although some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.
The 2023 Nissan Rogue served as a practical family car replacement, accommodating four people comfortably and a fifth person when necessary. The Platinum test vehicle featured premium semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seat designs provided comfort, although the rear seat's low cushion and diamond-shaped pleats detracted from comfort. The Rogue offered ample storage space, with a hands-free power liftgate revealing up to 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 74.1 cubic feet with the back seats folded. The Divide-N-Hide feature allowed for versatile cargo area configurations.
The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system's tile-based layout and crisp graphics were user-friendly, and the glass rotary controller added a touch of luxury. Higher trim levels offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch head-up display with a 3D effect. The GV70 also featured a digital-key function, a fingerprint scanner for starting the car, and a radar-based rear-seat monitor. Genesis Connected Services provided additional features, including remote camera activation and driver profiles.
The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or available 9-inch touchscreen display. The test vehicle featured the larger 9-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a Bose premium audio system. Alexa Built-in was new for 2023, but the voice recognition technology struggled with basic commands. The Rogue also had a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display, both of which performed well during testing.
The 2022 Genesis GV70 came standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and Highway Driving Assist. The GV70 also featured eight airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional driver-assist features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control. However, crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available for the GV70.
The 2023 Nissan Rogue offered an extensive array of safety features, including 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, and Safety Shield 360. The Rogue's ProPilot Assist with Navi-link combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, impressing with its accuracy and background operation. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for 2022, although it received Marginal and Acceptable scores in updated crash tests. The NHTSA awarded the Rogue a five-star overall rating, with four stars for frontal-impact collisions.
