2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2022 Ford Bronco Reviews Summary

The deep roster of Ford Bronco models means there’s one for almost any skill level, as well as a wide range of budgets. It’s as off-road capable as the Jeep Wrangler but is significantly better to drive on pavement. Unfortunately, the Bronco’s excellence is well documented and it’s so popular that it’s already sold out for 2022.

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 had a distinctive design that set it apart from other SUVs. It borrowed some styling cues from its Genesis siblings, such as the quad LED strips for headlights and taillights and a prominent shield-shaped grille. However, it also featured a sloping roofline and ribbed detailing, giving it a unique blend of ruggedness and sleekness. The Sport Prestige model added even more flair with its model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by an airplane wing's cross-section, with a minimalistic design that included a rotary gear selector and infotainment controller. The interior offered a variety of color options and luxurious materials, although base models came with leatherette seats.

The 2022 Ford Bronco, with its retro styling and off-road prowess, was a highly sought-after vehicle. It introduced new models like the Everglades, designed for swamp trekking with features like an intake snorkel and 35-inch mud-terrain tires. The Bronco lineup offered seven trims, each with increasing off-road capabilities. Despite its utilitarian appearance, the Bronco was equipped with modern technology, including G.O.A.T. modes for different terrains and a digital instrument panel. The interior was designed for practicality, with features like marine-grade vinyl upholstery and drain plugs for easy cleaning. The Bronco's modular construction allowed for customization, and it excelled both off-road and on pavement, offering a smoother ride than its rival, the Jeep Wrangler.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2022 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a 2.5-liter turbo-four producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 included features like a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. However, while the powertrain was capable, the chassis felt heavy and lacked the sharpness of some competitors. The GV70 was more comfortable on highways, but its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.

The 2022 Ford Bronco came with a base turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, and an optional 2.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The four-cylinder engine offered a seven-speed manual transmission with a crawl gear, while the V6 came with a 10-speed automatic. All Broncos featured four-wheel drive and an electronic two-speed transfer case. The Bronco excelled in off-road conditions, with models like the Everglades handling challenging terrain with ease. On pavement, the Bronco offered a smoother ride than expected for an off-road vehicle, making it a versatile choice for both adventure and everyday driving.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 provided mid-pack interior space for its segment. It offered comparable headroom to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and BMW X3, with adequate legroom and good rear-seat visibility. Cargo space was 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing it in the middle of the segment. The interior design, while stylish, compromised storage space, with limited room in the center console and door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered and featured heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, though some controls were less intuitive.

The 2022 Ford Bronco's boxy design contributed to its spacious interior, offering ample headroom and legroom. Cargo capacity varied by model and roof type, with the two-door hard top providing up to 52.3 cubic feet with seats folded, and the four-door hard top offering up to 77.6 cubic feet. The Bronco featured clever storage solutions, including netted door pockets and accessory rails. Its utility was enhanced by external mounting points and removable fender flares. However, the rear seats didn't fold flat, complicating the loading of larger items.

Technology

2022 Ford Bronco

The 2022 Genesis GV70 was equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system's tile-based layout and crisp graphics were user-friendly, and a glass rotary controller added functionality. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also included a digital-key feature and a fingerprint scanner for starting the car. Genesis Connected Services provided remote access to cameras and other features, enhancing convenience and safety.

The 2022 Ford Bronco integrated technology to enhance its off-road capabilities. G.O.A.T. modes allowed drivers to select settings optimized for specific terrains, while a forward-looking trail camera provided visibility of obstacles. The Bronco's Sync 4 infotainment system offered quick responses and sharp graphics, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Trail Turn Assist feature improved maneuverability in tight spaces, and the Bronco's technology suite was designed to keep drivers engaged while providing confidence in challenging conditions.

It also featured Highway Driving Assist with automated lane centering and adaptive cruise control. The GV70 included eight airbags, with a front-center airbag for added protection. Optional features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality. While crash-test ratings were not available, the GV70's safety systems were designed to provide comprehensive protection.

The 2022 Ford Bronco offered standard safety features like hill-start assist, hill descent control, and trailer sway control. Optional packages added features such as frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Bronco received a four-star frontal crash protection rating from the NHTSA and a three-star rollover protection rating.
