2021 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

Volvo may be known for sensible station wagons, but the XC90 SUV is the Swedish automaker’s de facto flagship. The current generation debuted design features, technology, and powertrains that have since found their way into most other Volvo models. Several years into the current-generation model’s lifecycle, the XC90 is no longer a trendsetter, but remains Volvo’s contender in the competitive midsize luxury SUV segment, with the automaker’s typical emphasis on safety features.

The current-generation XC90 launched for the 2016 model year, so most competitors—including the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class—have been updated or redesigned since then. The Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator didn’t even exist when this generation of XC90 launched.

A redesigned version is expected to arrive soon, so changes to the 2021 XC90 are minimal. All 2021 Volvo models are now limited to 112 mph for safety reasons and get Care Key, which lets owners limit the top speed before loaning the car out to a friend or family member. The XC90 also gets a handful of newly standard tech features, and some small cosmetic changes.

Volvo offers the XC90 in three trim levels—Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription—with three powertrain options: T5 and T6 gasoline engines, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. Our test car was a range-topping T8 Recharge Inscription, combining the top Inscription trim level with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which has the highest output of the three.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Grand Cherokee L can ask, with a straight face, that you pay up to $70,000 for the privilege of ownership. But because Jeep is a proudly American brand, a war veteran that helped Allied troops defeat fascism, the company has earned the kind of unvarnished reputation and universal praise given only to a handful of U.S. presidents.

As such, a $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We took a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve across Tennessee to prove it.

Look and feel
2021 Volvo XC90
9/10
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
9/10

The 2021 Volvo XC90 marked a significant shift in Volvo's design philosophy, moving away from its traditionally conservative styling. This model retained the brand's signature boxy profile and blunt front end but introduced softer lines and more chrome detailing, giving it a more modern and distinctive appearance. The LED headlights with "Thor's Hammer" daytime running lights added a unique touch, enhancing the vehicle's character while maintaining its Volvo identity. The XC90's interior embraced "Swedish minimalism," offering high-quality materials and a thoughtfully arranged cabin. The use of matte-finish wood trim and the option for wool upholstery provided a natural and luxurious feel, although the Orrefors crystal shifter seemed slightly out of place in the otherwise restrained interior.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was an elegant extension of the standard Grand Cherokee, with an 11.4-inch longer body to accommodate a third row of seats. The design seamlessly integrated the extra length, making the standard model appear truncated. The Grand Cherokee L maintained Jeep's recognizable features, such as the seven-slot grille and U-shaped wheel arches, while modernizing the lighting and improving paint finish and panel fit. The interior was luxurious, with dual high-resolution screens, real wood, and quilted Nappa leather, offering a premium feel akin to a Mercedes. The spacious cabin provided comfort for all passengers, although the air vents were somewhat inadequate, requiring the fan to be kept on high.

Performance

The 2021 Volvo XC90 offered three powertrains, all centered around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base T5 model featured a turbocharged engine producing 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the T6 added a supercharger, increasing output to 316 hp and 295 lb-ft. The T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid combined the T6 engine with electric motors, delivering a total of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft. Despite the impressive power figures, the small engine struggled with flexibility compared to competitors' six-cylinder or V8 options. The XC90's drive modes—Pure, Hybrid, and Power—offered varying levels of efficiency and performance, but the Pure mode was limited to low speeds. The XC90 excelled in ride quality, thanks to an optional air-suspension system, and maintained a quiet cabin, although its towing capacity was lower than some rivals.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L provided two engine options: a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8, both mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The V6, producing 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, felt underpowered for the vehicle's size, while the V8 offered a more robust 357 hp and 390 lb-ft. The 4xe plug-in hybrid, with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft, promised better performance, though it was untested. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis was a standout feature, offering excellent ride composure and steering feel. The optional air suspension provided five ride height settings, enhancing both on-road comfort and off-road capability. The vehicle's towing capacity reached up to 7,200 pounds with 4WD, making it a strong contender for those needing to haul heavy loads.

Form and function

The 2021 Volvo XC90 was available in six-seat or seven-seat configurations, with headroom and legroom being average for the segment. The third row was tight for adults, and the seats lacked support. A power moonroof and four-zone climate control added to the interior's spacious feel, but storage space was limited. Cargo capacity was 11.2 cubic feet with all seats in place, expanding to 64.1 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The hands-free power tailgate was a convenient feature.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, known for its simplicity and ease of use. The interior offered ample space in all rows, with second-row captain's chairs standard and a bench seat optional. A panoramic roof and numerous USB ports enhanced passenger comfort, though the air vents were insufficient. The infotainment system included an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen, depending on the trim, with some legibility issues noted. The Grand Cherokee L's cargo space was generous, accommodating both passengers and their belongings comfortably.

Technology

The 2021 Volvo XC90's Sensus infotainment system emphasized simplicity, featuring a 9-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The system was intuitive, though the text was sometimes difficult to read while driving. The wireless charging pad was a welcome addition, but its size limited compatibility with larger phones.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered a wealth of technology, especially in upper trims. Features included massage modes for the front seats, a head-up display, night vision, and a 360-degree camera system. The Uconnect system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the option for additional touchscreens for rear passengers. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring, with more advanced options available on higher trims.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, with numerous standard safety features such as lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Volvo's Pilot Assist system was praised for its smooth operation, though it struggled with certain highway curves.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L had not yet been tested by major safety organizations, but it came equipped with standard safety features like knee airbags, rear seat alert, and trailer sway control. The vehicle also included a comprehensive suite of driver aids, enhancing its safety credentials.
