The total cost was $64,770, pushing the Grand Cherokee L into a competitive price range. Despite some interior material scrutiny at this price, the Summit’s quilted and perforated leather, real wood trim, and a suite of technology ensured a premium feel. The 2022 model continued with the long-wheelbase (L) configuration, adding significant length to fit a third row of seats and extend second-row legroom. Its design made the standard two-row Grand Cherokee look almost truncated in comparison—though designed for a unified aesthetic purpose. Every 2021 Grand Cherokee L came with a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Buyers could choose between rear-wheel drive (RWD) and three different 4WD systems, all with front-axle disconnect technology for better fuel efficiency. Towing capacity maxed out at 6,200 pounds, and the V6's fuel economy was rated at 21 mpg combined. For more power, a 5.7-liter V8 engine was available, offering 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, solely with 4WD and in the higher trims (Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve). This engine increased the towing capacity to 7,200 pounds but decreased fuel economy to 17 mpg combined. An additional $3,295 charge applied for the V8 upgrade. Our test vehicle featured the V6 with 4WD, providing brisk acceleration but sounding loud when revved. The eight-speed automatic transmission was generally smooth, although it resisted downshifts in Auto mode, likely intended to improve fuel economy. The system averaged 17.8 mpg in our tests, underperforming expectations. Jeep's Quadra-Lift adaptive air suspension was notable, providing 8.3 inches of ground clearance in Normal mode, which could be raised to as much as 10.9 inches in Off-Road settings, enabling 24 inches of water fording. The vehicle tackled various terrains effortlessly, although only the Overland trim with the Off-Road Group was Trail Rated. The overall ride was smooth, with capable handling facilitated by the combination of the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system, large wheels, and variable-ratio steering. Figures for the 4xe hybrid weren't available but were expected to be more favorable. The 2022 Grand Cherokee L’s chassis stood out, offering an exceptionally composed ride with minimal body roll, pitch, or dive. The air suspension provided five ride height settings, significantly enhancing versatility in various driving conditions. Much like its predecessor, the 2022 model handled poor road conditions proficiently but with a higher degree of on-road comfort than off-road adventuring.

Four-zone climate control ensured air circulation in all three rows, although our test suggested the dashboard vents were insufficient in scorching temperatures, causing loud fan noise without delivering adequate cooling. The vehicle offered ample legroom and comfort in the second-row captain's chairs, with optional side window sunshades to shield passengers, particularly children. Child safety seats could remain installed while accessing the third row, which was spacious enough even for adults. Storage space included a rear cargo volume of 17.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 46.9 cubic feet with the seats folded, and a maximum of 84.6 cubic feet with all seats down. These dimensions were comparable to other three-row midsize SUVs. The 2022 model featured the Uconnect 5 system with sleeker, sharper graphics and easy-to-use physical controls for climate and audio functions. Depending on the trim, display sizes varied, with higher trims sporting a 10.1-inch touchscreen.
