2021 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator represent the smallest slice of the luxury SUV market. They're the heaviest, hugest, and fanciest people movers sold by mainstream automakers—and you can count them all on two hands. The Navigator, a popular nameplate since 1998, was redesigned in dramatic fashion for 2018. In its fourth model year, this Navigator still delights us as we test newer competitors costing at or above its $77,000 starting price. Foreign nameplates offer no equal to the Navigator, and it's not for sheer size or a desire to lift up Lincoln that we say this is one of the best American vehicles, among both trucks and cars, ever made.

2022 GMC Yukon Reviews Summary

No longer General Motors' exclusive truck-only brand now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

Redesigned for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information center and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

2021 Lincoln Navigator

9/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was a testament to elegance and sophistication, setting itself apart from its Ford Expedition roots. While it shared some structural elements with the Expedition, the Navigator's design was distinct, exuding a sense of luxury that appealed even to those accustomed to high-end brands like Mercedes and Range Rover. Its exterior was characterized by simple, rectilinear shapes, with a few chrome accents adding a touch of class. The Pristine White model, with its monochromatic package, black wheels, and illuminated Lincoln logo, was particularly striking during winter tests. Inside, the Navigator impressed with its seven color palettes and attention to finer details, such as the layered wood trim and minimalist digital instrument panel. The materials used were of high quality, and the Black Label trims offered even more luxurious textures and softer leather.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Yukon embraced a bold, chrome-heavy aesthetic, particularly evident in the Denali trim. The front of the Denali was dominated by a vast, multi-dimensional chrome grille, giving it a commanding presence. The Yukon offered a variety of trims, each with its unique styling, such as the off-road-oriented AT4 with its dark grille and skid plate. Inside, the Yukon provided a spacious cabin with standard seating for eight, with options for second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim offered exclusive interior designs, with our test vehicle featuring a Teak/Light Shale color combo that added a premium look. The AT4 trim had a Jet Black interior with Brandy accents, providing a custom feel. Overall, the Yukon delivered a tastefully crafted interior with plenty of room for passengers and cargo.

Performance

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

2022 GMC Yukon

7/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was powered by a remarkable twin-turbo V6 engine, borrowed from the Ford Raptor, producing 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided the Navigator with impressive acceleration and a satisfying engine note. The Navigator's 4WD system was smooth and responsive, offering a towing capacity of up to 8,700 pounds with the RWD model. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, averaging in the teens, consistent with its EPA-estimated 17-mpg combined rating. While the Navigator's adaptive dampers were standard, its suspension felt less refined compared to competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. Despite some shortcomings in ride quality and steering precision, the Navigator excelled in highway refinement and power delivery.

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered a choice of three engines, including a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower, a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine with 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The diesel engine, known as the "Baby Duramax," provided excellent fuel economy and a long driving range. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, with RWD standard and 4WD available. The AT4 trim was exclusively 4WD, featuring a two-speed transfer case for off-road capability. The Yukon's maximum towing capacity was 8,400 pounds with the 5.3-liter engine and Max Trailering Package. The Yukon benefited from an independent rear suspension, improving ride quality and handling. However, some bouncing was noted over rough surfaces, despite the optional air ride adaptive suspension.

Form and function

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offered a spacious interior, capable of accommodating six adults comfortably. While technically a seven-passenger SUV, the third row's middle seat was best suited for children. The Navigator's boxy shape contributed to its generous cargo space, with 19 cubic feet behind the third row, 57 behind the second, and 103 in total. The long-wheelbase Navigator L provided even more storage capacity. The rear glass opened separately from the tailgate, adding convenience. The Navigator's front seats were highly adjustable and comfortable, with numerous customization options. However, parking the large SUV could be challenging, despite the 360-degree cameras.

The 2022 GMC Yukon addressed previous shortcomings in third-row space, increasing legroom by over 10 inches. Cargo space also improved, with 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row. The Yukon's redesign included a longer wheelbase and independent rear suspension, contributing to the increased space. The second-row seats folded flat, and power-folding options were available for added convenience. The Denali trim featured a power-sliding center console with hidden storage, enhancing practicality. Power-retractable assist steps made entry and exit easier, though they could be cumbersome in wet conditions. The Yukon's pushbutton transmission controls required some adjustment but ultimately proved user-friendly.

Technology

2021 Lincoln Navigator

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator featured a 10-inch touchscreen, which felt small compared to newer competitors. While the infotainment system was intuitive, it lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 20-speaker Revel Ultima stereo was good but not exceptional. The Navigator offered onboard 4G WiFi, wireless device charging, and a smartwatch app. However, it lacked onboard apps and wireless software updates. The rear entertainment system included Roku media streaming and various connectivity options.

The 2022 GMC Yukon boasted a 12-inch reconfigurable driver information center and a 15-inch head-up display, providing essential information in a convenient location. The 10.2-inch touchscreen featured Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. The Denali trim included a Bose 14-speaker audio system, though its sound quality was underwhelming. The rear-seat media system offered dual 12.6-inch touchscreens with various media compatibility. Overall, the Yukon's technology package was comprehensive and user-friendly.

It offered standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional inflatable rear seat belts were available for added safety.

The 2022 GMC Yukon came with GMC's Pro Safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. The Pro Safety Plus package added blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The Yukon received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with five stars for side crash protection.
