2021 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

There was a time when everybody in America seemingly drove an Explorer. That may be an exaggeration, but not by much. In its first four years of production, Ford sold over a million examples. In 1998, Ford was selling its second-generation Explorer at a rate of nearly 440,000 per year. Whether your family purchased an Explorer or not, this was the nameplate that invented the midsize SUV segment.

Fast forward to the 2021 model year and the Explorer is in its sixth generation. It's now a three-row SUV that clocks in at a maximum of 4,700 pounds, with a price tag north of $50,000 for the Explorer Platinum trim level. Long gone are the days when it was the only game in town. Almost every automaker has a competitor. So how does the Explorer shake out for 2021?

2022 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Sometimes, only a full-size SUV will do. Among the handful of large luxury models available, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator stands apart with its classically elegant design, robust towing capacity, and soothing comfort in all three rows of seats.

For the 2022 Navigator, Lincoln makes numerous changes to update the SUV’s styling, comfort, technology, safety, and driving dynamics. To experience the changes first-hand, we headed to Scottsdale, Arizona following a cold snap of winter weather. In short, the facelift has revived the aging Navigator, keeping it competitive against newer rivals.

2021 Ford Explorer

7/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2021 Ford Explorer had a design that fit well within Ford's SUV lineup, which ranged from the Escape to the Expedition. The Explorer's exterior was sporty, with raked belt lines and distinctive visages, though it could be mistaken for the Edge at a quick glance. The vehicle offered six trim levels, each with varying grille designs and price points from $32,925 to $52,730. Inside, the Explorer featured three rows of seats as standard, with cloth upholstery on the base model and leather available on higher trims. The dashboard was clean, with an 8-inch LCD touchscreen and a rotary gearshift that freed up storage space.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator received subtle styling updates, including new headlights, taillights, and a redesigned front end. The grille, reminiscent of a 2006 Audi A4, was a rare misstep in an otherwise successful update. Inside, the Navigator dazzled with quality materials and a mid-century modern design, featuring Lincoln’s Constellation display theme. The new Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen was a significant upgrade. The Navigator continued to offer Standard, Reserve, and Black Label trims, with prices starting at $78,405. The Black Label trim, tested in the Central Park theme, featured a luxurious green interior and a total sticker price of $106,530.
