2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally-charged solution.

2021 Hyundai Palisade Reviews Summary

Critically acclaimed and selling well, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level.

For this review, we evaluated a Palisade Calligraphy with optional all-wheel drive (AWD) and carpeted floor mats. It cost $49,115, including destination.

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2021 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's commitment to delivering a premium experience. It featured captivating style and compelling substance, with continual improvements that enhanced its appeal. This model year saw the addition of more standard equipment, refined instrumentation, and control markings that elevated the cabin's appearance. Modifications were made to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness, while the turbocharged engine received a torque boost. The all-wheel-drive versions gained a new off-road traction assistance feature, making the CX-5 a well-rounded choice for those seeking a blend of style and performance.

In contrast, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy distinguished itself with a unique grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, and additional lower body trim. It boasted 20-inch wheels and upgraded interior detailing, including a simulated suede headliner. The Calligraphy trim made the Palisade appear more luxurious, drawing attention with its unconventional styling. Inside, the Palisade's cabin was a standout, offering a Beige over Navy Blue color scheme with premium Nappa leather and a suede headliner. The Palisade's interior was a genuine bargain, providing a level of luxury that belied its price tag.

Performance

2020 Mazda CX-5

2021 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 came equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims featured a turbocharged engine, delivering up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque with premium fuel. Despite its 3,825-pound curb weight, the CX-5 Signature accelerated with authority, though it was less efficient, achieving 24 mpg in combined driving. The CX-5's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced its driving dynamics, but excessive body motions detracted from the overall experience.

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade, on the other hand, was powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine generating 291 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered front-wheel drive as standard, with an optional all-wheel-drive system. The Palisade featured multiple driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Smart, and Sport, with AWD models adding Snow mode and a Lock function. The Palisade's firmer suspension tuning provided excellent body-motion control, making it enjoyable to drive. It was undemanding in typical driving scenarios, with plenty of power and easy maneuverability. The Palisade's 5,000-pound towing capacity and new seven-pin trailer pre-wiring connector added to its versatility.

Form and function

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

2021 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5's interior was stylish and well-appointed, but it was more cramped compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Mazda focused on creating an upscale cabin with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and rear air conditioning vents. The Signature trim added Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and more. While the front seats were comfortable, rear passengers might find legroom lacking. Cargo space measured 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanding to 59.6 cubic feet with the back seat folded.

In contrast, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade offered a spacious and accommodating interior. The Calligraphy trim provided a plush experience with eight-way power-adjustable seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and second-row captain's chairs. The Palisade's third-row seat was more accommodating than most in its class, and the SUV offered ample in-cabin storage space. Cargo space measured 18 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, expanding to 86.4 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded. The hands-free Smart Liftgate added convenience, though it could be disabled if desired.

Technology

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which conveyed an upscale impression but required acclimation. The system included a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and more. The Grand Touring trim added a color 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a Bose premium sound system. Signature trim enhanced the technology with a navigation system and a surround-view camera. However, the system's controls were not ideal, and voice-recognition technology was limited.

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade offered two infotainment systems, with 8-inch and 10.25-inch touchscreen displays. The Calligraphy trim included SiriusXM satellite radio, a navigation system, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The Palisade's technology features included wireless smartphone charging, a Driver Talk intercom system, and a Quiet Mode. A head-up display and surround-view camera system added to the SUV's tech offerings, providing a comprehensive and user-friendly experience.

Standard features included adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. The CX-5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, making it a safe choice for families.

The 2021 Hyundai Palisade also prioritized safety, with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and multiple lane-keeping systems as standard. The Palisade's Highway Drive Assist was a standout feature, providing smooth and sophisticated driving assistance.
