2020 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

The Lexus RX was the original luxury lifestyle crossover in the United States The 2020 Lexus RX comes in two-row and three-row varieties. The three-row version is given the Lexus RX-L moniker. They both deliver on the key points that make the RX a solid choice for buyers shopping in the midsize luxury SUV segment.

2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally-charged solution.

Look and feel

2020 Lexus RX

8/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2020 Lexus RX received a significant refresh, enhancing its appeal both inside and out. The exterior updates included standard 18-inch wheels, slimmer headlights, and L-shaped taillights, with optional triple-beam LED headlights. The grille was redesigned to align with the Lexus car lineup, and new paint colors like Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Nori Green Pearl were introduced. The rear of the vehicle was revamped with a new shape, dual exhaust, and updated reflectors, while a hands-free tailgate became available. Inside, the RX maintained its reputation for a well-appointed cabin with various interior color and material options, including wood and satin-brushed aluminum trim. The F Sport appearance package added unique features like a special steering wheel, shift knob, and 20-inch wheels, enhancing the SUV's sporty appeal. Despite its aging design, the RX's interior remained functional, though the center stack's dated look was noted as a drawback.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 aimed to deliver a premium experience, with more standard equipment and improvements to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. The SUV's turbocharged engine received a torque boost, and AWD models gained an off-road traction assistance feature. The CX-5's design, rooted in Mazda's "Kodo" styling, continued to impress with its appealing and upscale appearance. Inside, the Signature trim offered a luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery, real wood, and a black headliner. However, the Caturra Brown leather lacked contrast against the predominantly black cabin. The CX-5's interior was stylish and well-equipped, with features like dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and a power liftgate in higher trims. Despite its upscale cabin, the CX-5's interior space was more cramped compared to competitors, which Mazda attempted to offset by emphasizing its premium features.

Performance

2020 Lexus RX

9/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2020 Lexus RX 350 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The three-row RX 350L had slightly reduced power at 290 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The RX 450h hybrid combined the V6 with an electric motor, achieving 308 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. The RX 450hL hybrid had a total output of 259 horsepower from the gasoline engine and 165 horsepower from an electric motor. The RX's performance was smooth, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds for most models. Fuel economy varied, with the RX 350 achieving 23 mpg combined, while the RX 450h hybrid excelled at 30 mpg combined. The F Sport models offered adaptive variable suspension and sportier features, enhancing agility and driving experience.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 came standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims featured a turbocharged version, producing 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel. The turbo engine was less efficient, with a combined rating of 24 mpg, compared to 26 mpg for the naturally aspirated engine with AWD. The CX-5's driving experience was engaging, thanks to G-Vectoring Control Plus technology, but excessive body motions detracted from its sporty feel. Despite this, the CX-5 was enjoyable to drive, with responsive steering and brakes, making it a delight in typical driving situations.

Form and function

2020 Lexus RX

8/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2020 Lexus RX's interior was not as minimalist or stylish as some German luxury SUVs, but it was functional. The two-row RX comfortably accommodated four adults, while the three-row RX-L's third row was best suited for small children. The cabin was spacious in the two-row configuration, with comfortable front seats and decent visibility. However, the cargo area was smaller than competitors, with a high load floor limiting space. The RX 350L and 450hL also had less cargo space compared to rivals, though a hands-free liftgate was available.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5's interior was more cramped than some competitors, but it offered a stylish and upscale cabin. The Touring trim added comfort features like dual-zone climate control and heated seats, while higher trims included ventilated front seats and Nappa leather. The front seats were comfortable, though rear legroom was limited. Cargo space measured 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanding to 59.6 cubic feet with the seats folded. A power liftgate was standard on higher trims, enhancing convenience.

Technology

The 2020 Lexus RX's infotainment system was often criticized, but improvements were made for 2020. The display was moved closer to the driver, and the system became a touchscreen. Despite these changes, navigation remained challenging, though Apple CarPlay and other integrations provided workarounds. The RX featured six USB ports and a standard 12-speaker audio system, with an optional 15-speaker Mark Levinson system.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured a Mazda Connect infotainment system, offering an upscale impression but requiring acclimation. The Sport trim had a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims added Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose premium sound system. The Signature trim included navigation and a surround-view camera. Interaction options included the touchscreen, center console controls, and voice recognition, though none were ideal. Mazda planned to update the system for 2021, addressing some issues.

The 2020 Lexus RX came with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, including adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. Additional features like daytime bicyclist detection and lane-tracing assist were standard. The RX received good safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, though connectivity issues with Enform Safety Connect were noted during testing.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard i-Activsense features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. The CX-5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Its structural engineering and performance in crash tests contributed to its high safety marks.
