2020 GMC Acadia Reviews Summary

Long story short, as a friend of mine likes to say, GMC screwed up. This is just my opinion, of course, but when GMC redesigned the Acadia for the 2017 model year, the SUV shrank in size and switched to a softer look in order to plug a huge hole in the Buick-GMC SUV lineup.

Fast-forward to 2020, and GMC may have decided this move was a bad idea. As part of a refresh, the new Acadia adopts bolder styling and adds a new AT4 trim level with greater off-roading capability. Additional changes include the availability of a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a new nine-speed automatic transmission, and new and updated technology.

These revisions do help the Acadia to better stand out in what is now an ocean of midsize SUVs, from Hyundai to Kia and Honda to Toyota, and everything in between, but it’s up to GMC to make people aware of this fundamentally good, but oh-so-vanilla SUV. And the company must also address the Acadia’s questionable value.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The Land Rover Range Rover is the definitive word in “ultra-luxury sport utility vehicle.” It’s the perfect example of a no-compromise SUV, delivering superlative cabin space, luxury appointments, power, and capability.

Believe it or not, the current fourth-generation Range Rover is getting long in the tooth. A fifth-generation Range Rover is around the corner, so how has Land Rover kept its flagship SUV relevant? With incremental updates through the years. In addition to new infotainment and safety technologies, Land Rover has continued to expand the powertrain lineup, to the point where there are now six different powertrain options. So does the Range Rover continue to set the standard for 4x4 luxury? Read on to find out.

2020 GMC Acadia

8/10

2020 Land Rover Range Rover

9/10

The 2020 GMC Acadia was positioned as a premium SUV, offering a range of trims from the basic SL to the luxurious Denali. Built on the same platform as the Cadillac XT5, the Acadia shared its assembly line with other GM models in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The Denali trim, in particular, aimed to convey upscale aspirations with its brightwork and intricate detailing on the front grille. Inside, the Acadia's cabin featured a mix of soft surfaces and hard plastics, with leather upholstery and wood trim in the Denali. Despite these touches, the interior struggled to fully establish itself as a premium choice, relying on contrast stitching and bronze-tinted accents for distinction.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover, on the other hand, carried a legacy of luxury and rugged capability. Introduced in 1969, the Range Rover evolved into a symbol of opulence built on robust 4x4 underpinnings. By 2020, it offered multiple trims, including the HSE, Autobiography, and SVAutobiography Dynamic, with options for standard or long wheelbase configurations. The Range Rover's design emphasized comfort and sophistication, with leather seating, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free tailgate as standard features. The interior boasted a dual-screen infotainment system, offering a blend of modern technology and traditional luxury.

The 2020 GMC Acadia offered three engine options, starting with a 193-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for lower trims. The SLT trim introduced a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The AT4 and Denali trims featured a 310-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acadia's ride and handling were finely tuned, providing a smooth driving experience, though it lacked memorable driving character. The V6 engine offered up to 4,000 pounds of towing capacity, and the Acadia's fuel economy was rated at 21 mpg combined.

In contrast, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover presented a diverse array of powertrains. The base engine was a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a mild-hybrid system, producing 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The HSE trim offered a non-hybrid version with 395 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. A turbodiesel V6 was also available, rated at 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The P525 and Autobiography trims featured a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, delivering 518 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. The SVAutobiography Dynamic trim boasted a 557-hp V8. All engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The Range Rover excelled in comfort and off-road capability, with an electronic air suspension and Terrain Response System for various driving conditions.

The 2020 GMC Acadia offered seating for five, six, or seven passengers, depending on the trim and configuration. The Denali trim featured standard second-row captain’s chairs, providing six-passenger seating. The front seats were wide and supportive, with 10-way power adjustments, heating, and ventilation. The third-row seat, though roomier than expected, had limited space between the seat and the back of the SUV. Cargo volume measured 12.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 41.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 79 cubic feet with the second row down.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover provided standard seating for five, with an option for second-row captain’s chairs, reducing capacity to four. The SWB version offered 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, while the LWB model provided 77.5 cubic feet. The Range Rover featured a hands-free power liftgate with a two-piece configuration, enhancing convenience for loading large items. The interior included a center-console compartment and decently sized door compartments and cupholders.

The 2020 GMC Acadia came equipped with essential infotainment features, including Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The 8-inch touchscreen offered a higher resolution display and improved voice recognition. The Acadia's infotainment system was user-friendly, with additional technology upgrades such as USB-C ports, a wireless charging pad, a high-definition surround-view camera, and a rear camera mirror.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo system, consisting of two touchscreens. The top screen managed navigation, phone, stereo, and smartphone connectivity, while the lower screen controlled climate, seat settings, and Terrain Response. The system had a learning curve, with integrated dials that changed functions based on the selected menu. The Range Rover also included a fully digital instrument panel and an optional head-up display.

The 2020 GMC Acadia offered standard safety features like a rear-seat reminder system and Teen Driver technology. Advanced safety features like forward collision warning and low-speed automatic emergency braking were available on higher trims. The NHTSA awarded the Acadia 5-star ratings in most assessments, with a 4-star rollover resistance rating. The IIHS provided incomplete data, with high marks in available tests.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover came with standard safety features such as low-speed automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and parking sensors. Optional features included a 360-degree parking camera, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Range Rover's safety features were comprehensive, though some were optional rather than standard.
