2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfill goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its United States dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for the U.S. came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed ID.4 Standard, slotting below the ID.4 S, ID.4 Pro, ID.4 Pro S, and ID.4 Pro S Plus trim levels (the Pro S Plus replaces the Gradient appearance package from previous model years). We recently spent a day driving a Pro S AWD model from Nashville to Chattanooga, along with a shorter drive in an ID.4 Standard model.

Look and feel

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a complete redesign. Its front and side profiles remained similar to the previous generation, with broad, rounded features and minimalistic sheet metal. A notable change was the vertical accent strip under the mirrors, replacing the old L-shaped trim. The rear saw the most significant update, with thin LED strips replacing the square taillights, enhancing its imposing presence. Inside, the Range Rover featured a simplified design with fewer buttons, a larger touchscreen, and premium materials, offering a luxurious feel comparable to high-end alternatives like Maybach or Bentley.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received minor styling tweaks, including gloss black trim on the front bumper and a squared-off rear bumper for improved aerodynamics. It maintained a distinct EV appearance, lacking the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance. Built on VW’s MEB platform, the ID.4 offered a minimalist interior with quality materials, including leatherette upholstery made partly from recycled fibers. The interior changes for 2023 improved functionality, with a conventional lid for the center console and better phone storage, enhancing its appeal as a practical, affordable EV.

Performance

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: a P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and a P530 with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4WD. The P400 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, impressive for its nearly 6,000-pound weight. The Range Rover excelled in agility, with well-managed body roll and standard rear-wheel steering for sharp turns. Its off-road capability was enhanced by the Terrain Response system, providing a smooth, quiet ride.

The 2023 ID.4 featured a new 62-kWh battery for base models, with RWD producing 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. AWD models offered 295 hp and 339 lb-ft, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery reduced weight by 240 pounds, improving handling. While the ID.4 rivaled hot hatchbacks in acceleration, it allowed too much body roll for spirited driving. Regenerative braking was present but didn’t support one-pedal driving, offering a familiar experience for new EV drivers.

Form and function

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

The 2022 Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered comfort with massage functions, and storage was plentiful with dual glove boxes and a large center console. The second row accommodated tall passengers with power adjustments and climate controls. The optional third row was less spacious but suitable for smaller passengers. Cargo space varied from 17.1 to 93 cubic feet, with a split tailgate aiding loading.

The 2023 ID.4 boasted more interior space than other affordable EVs, with 30.3 cubic feet of cargo space expanding to 64.2 cubic feet with seats folded. It offered towing capabilities of 2,200 pounds for RWD and 2,700 pounds for AWD. Interior updates included a conventional center console lid and improved phone storage, with three-zone climate control and heated rear seats enhancing comfort.

The 2022 Range Rover featured a 13-inch touchscreen with the Pivi Pro system, offering sharp graphics and quick responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, complemented by a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, with a 35-speaker upgrade available. Additional tech included Amazon Alexa, remote parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2023 ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen and software updates for improved responsiveness. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, with a digital instrument cluster. The user interface had haptic touchpads, which lacked physical feedback, but voice recognition mitigated this issue. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, adding a unique touch.

Safety

The 2022 Range Rover lacked crash test ratings but included standard safety features like frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. These features performed well, though some rivals offered more advanced options.

The 2023 ID.4 received a five-star NHTSA rating and the 2022 model earned an IIHS “Top Safety Pick+.” It included standard features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0. New for 2023 were Park Assist Plus and a 360-degree camera system, enhancing safety.
