| 2015 | $12,643 | $11,407 – $12,672 |
| 2014 | $11,118 | $9,947 – $11,118 |
The Toyota Prius's current nationwide average price is $18,397, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $14,693 over the past year.
Recently, prices have come down for the 2024 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong used-car pick if you want efficiency, practicality, and everyday comfort. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Prius for its excellent fuel economy, comfortable ride, and reliability. They also frequently highlight its cargo space and overall value for daily commuting, which helps explain why it remains such a popular choice.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in recent expert reviews are real-world fuel economy that can trail expectations, a cramped back seat, and limited cargo space.
31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
The Prius has a strong reputation with owners for fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable daily driving. Expert commentary also consistently points to its practical character, useful cargo space, and long-running durability.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and hybrid-system wear than to the Prius nameplate itself, so a careful history check and pre-purchase inspection matter.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93.7% |
| 2025 | 91.8% |
| 2024 | 90.7% |
| 2023 | 85.7% |
| 2022 | 80.5% |
| 2021 | 70% |
| 2020 | 65.4% |
| 2019 | 59.6% |
| 2018 | 57.8% |
| 2017 | 54.6% |
| 2016 | 54.3% |
| 2015 | 54.2% |
| 2014 | 53.6% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: This is the entry point to the lineup and gives you the standard Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. It suits you if you want the core Prius experience at the lowest price.
- XLE: This trim adds more available equipment, including the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen option, and it is a strong value if you want a more upscale tech setup without moving to the top trim.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and exclusive Karashi paint for a more distinctive look.
- Limited: This trim brings the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and it is the best fit if you want the most advanced tech and available visibility aids, including the surround-view camera system.
What Toyota Prius do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Prius years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,283 | 36.8% |
| 2025 | 1,210 | 37.3% |
| 2023 | 903 | 33% |
| 2014 | 772 | 29.5% |
| 2026 | 747 | 38.7% |
| 2016 | 698 | 31.8% |
Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they usually offer a wider mix of prices, trims, and available listings. That gives you more chances to compare condition, equipment, and deal quality before you buy.
What is the Toyota Prius's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $29,752 | −7.57% |
| 2018 | $17,592 | −0.74% |
| 2024 | $29,975 | −0.14% |
| 2014 | $11,118 | +0.42% |
| 2016 | $15,242 | +1.62% |
| 2017 | $16,501 | +1.66% |
| 2023 | $28,506 | +1.77% |
| 2020 | $21,622 | +2.65% |
| 2021 | $21,484 | +3.21% |
| 2022 | $23,472 | +3.28% |
| 2019 | $20,056 | +3.32% |
| 2015 | $12,643 | +7.94% |
The table shows a mixed picture, with some recent model years moving down and several older years moving up. For used buyers, that means you can still find softer pricing in parts of the lineup, while other years continue to command firmer values.
The 2014, 2018, and 2024 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2019, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Toyota Prius now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.57% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −0.14%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 37.3% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.8%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,975. The Toyota Prius offers a practical hatchback layout, useful everyday space, and a long-standing reputation for efficiency.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, and Toyota says the net output measures 194 horsepower.
- Tech: Every 2025 Prius comes equipped with a Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system, and both TAM systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is standard in every 2025 Prius, and the highlights include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Starting price: For the 2025 model year, the Prius is available in LE, XLE, Nightshade Edition, and Limited trim levels. Pricing ranges from $29,545 to $36,560, including the $1,195 destination charge.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Many drivers highlight features such as cargo space and safety, which contribute to its practicality and value for money. However, some common complaints include a lack of power and acceleration, as well as concerns about the sound system and interior noise levels. The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota Prius stands out by blending style, practicality, and affordability in a way that makes it easy to recommend for everyday use. It recently won the 2024 World Car Design of the Year, and it is described as a car that can carry up to five people while offering a practical interior at an appealing price. For buyers focused on value, it also starts at less than $30,000.
Efficiency is another major part of its appeal: the Prius gets up to 57 mpg in combined driving, and all-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid powertrain are available. The car’s strengths include fuel efficiency, great safety ratings, and excellent value for money. Its drawbacks are worth noting, though, since the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited at 23.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat, and the instrumentation is poor.
