| 2014 | $15,969 | $14,284 – $15,955 |
The Ford Mustang's current nationwide average price is $28,970, and its year-round low is $25,624.40. That gives you a useful snapshot of where this model sits right now in its own market. Recently, prices have come down for the 2024 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the Ford Mustang has broad appeal because it blends performance, style, and a fun driving experience across generations. The all-generations owner rating is 4.62/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Mustang’s powerful acceleration, engaging handling, and iconic styling. They also frequently highlight the sound and character of the V8 engines, along with the variety of engine choices that lets you tailor the car to your priorities.
Expert reviews rate the 2018 and 2021 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs that show up in recent expert reviews are a cramped back seat, limited cargo space, and a noisy cabin. Those are the kinds of compromises you should expect if you want a Mustang’s character and performance.
24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Ford Mustang models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Mustang for its performance, fun driving experience, and strong styling, and expert reviews reinforce its engaging character and broad appeal. Across the years, that combination makes it a car many shoppers enjoy living with.
- Owners rate the Ford Mustang between 4.42 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by checking maintenance history carefully, especially on older examples and on cars with higher mileage or more performance-focused equipment.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 75.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93.8% |
| 2025 | 92.6% |
| 2024 | 91.3% |
| 2023 | 88.5% |
| 2022 | 79.2% |
| 2021 | 74.1% |
| 2020 | 68.9% |
| 2019 | 65% |
| 2018 | 61.3% |
| 2017 | 57.1% |
| 2016 | 56.5% |
| 2015 | 57.6% |
| 2014 | 59.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission. The manual transmission drops fuel economy figures by 1 mpg across the board.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: The best-value trim for many shoppers, with the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 10-speed automatic, and the core Mustang formula at the lowest starting price.
- GT: Adds the Coyote 5.0-liter V8, a six-speed manual, and the stronger muscle-car character many buyers want from the Mustang.
- Dark Horse: Sits at the top of the range with 500 hp and additional performance enhancements for buyers who want the most focused performance.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,640 | 29.2% |
| 2025 | 3,610 | 29.3% |
| 2023 | 3,162 | 28.5% |
| 2020 | 2,227 | 26.4% |
| 2021 | 2,083 | 26.2% |
| 2019 | 2,058 | 27.1% |
Higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, more trim and price combinations to choose from, and a better chance of finding the equipment you want. They also usually attract more shoppers because they sit close to the current generation and feel familiar while still offering modern features.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $43,036 | −9.76% |
| 2024 | $37,878 | −5.23% |
| 2020 | $26,679 | −4.71% |
| 2016 | $19,792 | −3.52% |
| 2019 | $27,213 | −3.27% |
| 2018 | $22,439 | −3.0% |
| 2017 | $21,633 | −2.84% |
| 2021 | $31,565 | −1.3% |
| 2015 | $20,264 | −1.07% |
| 2022 | $34,432 | +1.89% |
| 2014 | $15,969 | +4.75% |
| 2023 | $33,001 | +8.08% |
Most model years in this set are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used. A few years are rising instead, so pricing is not moving in one direction across the board. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while some older and mid-cycle years are holding firmer or climbing.
The 2023, 2014, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.
Is the Ford Mustang safe?
- 2024: 6/10
- 2021: 9/10
- 2020: 7/10
- 2018: 8/10
- 2016: 9/10
- 2015: 9/10
- 2014: 6/10
For the safest used buy, the 2015, 2016 and 2021 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Ford Mustang now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.76% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −5.23%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 29.3% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 29.2%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $37,878. The Ford Mustang offers iconic styling, strong acceleration, and an engaging driving experience that make it easy to understand why so many shoppers keep coming back to it.
Consider waiting if:

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

Why it stands out
The 2025 Ford Mustang stands out because it keeps the classic Mustang formula intact while offering a wide spread of performance choices. It remains a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible, and it is built at Ford’s Flat Rock production facility in Michigan. For shoppers, that means the car still delivers the familiar Mustang character, but with enough variety to suit both everyday driving and more serious performance ambitions.
In 2025, the Mustang is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine in base and mainstream trims, while upper trims use 5.0-liter V8 engines producing 480 hp or 500 hp, depending on trim. A 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. Ford also offered a 60th Anniversary special-edition package in 2025, with only 1,965 produced in a special Brittany Blue color. That mix of engines, transmissions, and special packaging helps explain why the Mustang remains appealing to buyers who want a sports car with broad appeal and strong heritage.
There are also a few cautions to keep in mind. The 2024 and 2025 Ford Mustangs have been reported to suffer from powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, issues with the limited-slip differential, and problems with the electronic stability control system. The EcoBoost engine may get good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel. Even so, the 2025 Mustang’s combination of recognizable styling, rear-drive dynamics, and multiple performance levels keeps it distinctive in a market where few rivals still offer this kind of traditional muscle-car formula.
