CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 1,255 currently listed for sale and an average price of $34,942, 33.5% of 2021 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Sienna 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
73.7% of 2021 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new style and a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain that is standard equipment. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production, and the hybrid version is built on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. Those changes make it a notably different kind of Sienna than before, with a clear emphasis on efficiency and modernization.
In everyday use, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. That combination makes it appealing for families and anyone who wants a comfortable, practical vehicle with plenty of room. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling, especially for road trips.
There are tradeoffs, though. The test-drive data points to uninspired styling and a stereo that is lacking, while owner comments also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, and some missing convenience and connectivity features. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s distinctive mix of hybrid efficiency, space, and comfort gives it a strong identity in the minivan segment.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.33/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8.33/10 overall score. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling, especially for road trips. The hybrid setup and available AWD also come up as satisfying for many owners, which fits the Sienna’s family-first mission.
The main trade-offs are acceleration and interior material quality, along with some missing convenience and connectivity features. In practical terms, this is a minivan that leans hard into comfort, efficiency, and space rather than excitement.
With the Sienna positioned as a practical family vehicle that emphasizes hybrid efficiency and everyday usability, it makes the most sense if you want a comfortable people mover rather than a flashy one. 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is meaningful value to be found.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers’ feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for the hybrid setup, smooth handling, and road-trip comfort. The owner summary also highlights the model as a strong fit for buyers who want something they can count on for family duty and regular use.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the engine, motor, and battery combination as a proven one. It also notes that Toyota’s hybrid system is similar to the setup used in the current Highlander Hybrid, which supports confidence in the underlying hardware.
Toyota also includes an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related component warranty, which is a useful ownership cushion for used buyers. Even so, you should still budget for normal wear items and verify maintenance history before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or interior wear, since the market includes a sizable number of non-clean-history vehicles.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE uses 17-inch wheels, while higher trims add larger wheel sizes and more upscale exterior and interior touches. The base trim also misses some convenience items that appear higher up the range, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors produce 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available on all trim levels, and the CVT is tuned more for smooth efficiency than quick throttle response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on all trim levels and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System, 10 airbags, LATCH connectors, rear-seat reminder, TPMS, and an inflator kit are also standard.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports. Wireless phone integration is not mentioned, and the available rear-seat entertainment system and premium audio are reserved for higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35/36/35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a nine-inch touchscreen, and the core efficiency story that defines the Sienna. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the extra comfort and tech upgrades.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience and tech upgrades without jumping all the way to the luxury end of the range. It also unlocks more available equipment, making it a smart middle ground for family buyers.
- XSE: This trim adds a more distinctive look and sits above the mainstream family-focused grades. It is a good fit if you want a sportier appearance and more upscale presence without going to the top trims.
- Limited: This is where the Sienna starts to feel notably more premium, with features like the larger driver display, available premium audio, and more upscale tech options. Choose it if comfort and convenience matter more than price.
- Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version, with the 10-inch head-up display, available digital rearview mirror, and the most advanced feature set in the lineup. It suits you if you want the most technology and are willing to pay for it.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System are standard across the lineup, so even the lower trims give you the core safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward comparison shopping.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,254 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,963, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $34,958 sits slightly below last year's $35,943.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that means resale value will depend heavily on how well your specific van holds up in condition, mileage, and equipment.
Because the Sienna is a hybrid minivan with strong family appeal, well-kept examples should continue to attract steady interest. Listings with clean history and desirable equipment are likely to be easier to move later than higher-mileage or rough-condition examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna has not yet received released crash-test ratings from IIHS or NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on all trim levels and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, LATCH connectors, a rear-seat reminder, TPMS, and an inflator kit.
That said, you should note that the crash-test picture is incomplete for this model year in the provided data. For used buyers, that makes a careful inspection and a clean history report especially important.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s 2021 redesign makes the hybrid powertrain standard and modernizes the Sienna’s overall package.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,635, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $34,958 average.
- It offers all-wheel drive and strong practicality for buyers who want a lower entry price.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,066, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,958 average.
- It adds a new Woodland trim level for buyers who want a more adventurous look.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned hybrid Sienna with modern efficiency and strong owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the right target. If price matters most, the 2020 is the better value play, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer-year premium and the Woodland trim option.
