Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that tries to make practicality feel more engaging. The expert test drive data describes the Sonata N Line as a credible car for driving enthusiasts who still want a sedan that is thrilling to drive, and it also says the model is aimed at people who want on-pavement performance without giving up passenger and cargo practicality. That combination gives the Sonata a distinctive place in a shrinking car market, where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
It also brings together several appealing traits that broaden its appeal beyond performance alone. The listed strengths include stylish design, multiple powertrain options, and impressive technology, while the summary says the Sonata N Line addresses both performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package at a bargain price. At the same time, the car is not without compromises: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. Owner feedback also points to a smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, and an excellent powertrain warranty, though some drivers mention cabin noise and frustration with optional features that require an upgrade for full functionality.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

Cabin noise but I don’t mind it’s relaxing. Limited is fast too in sport mode. Love ambient interior lighting.

At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line treatment adds gloss black exterior accents, 19-inch wheels, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, and a panoramic sunroof. Those features make it the most distinctive version described here.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s SmartSense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.

- Fuel efficiency: The powertrain is rated at 27 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes an observed 23.7 mpg over a mixed route.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,437 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,119, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $17,123 sits slightly below last year's $18,481.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well now, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. The Sonata’s strong equipment level and broad appeal should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable features.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata N Line earns strong marks from our experts for safety, and it comes with Hyundai’s SmartSense collection of advanced driver-assistance systems.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard feature set includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
One caveat is that the review notes the NHTSA had not carried over the standard Sonata’s frontal-impact ratings to the N Line at the time, and IIHS had not yet assigned a rating to this version. That means you should lean heavily on the ADAS equipment and a careful inspection history when evaluating a used example.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The N Line delivers a bargain-priced, enthusiast-friendly midsize sedan with strong performance and practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $19,670, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,123 average.
- It leans harder into value, quality, and a quiet cabin while keeping the Sonata’s strong warranty and safety appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the better price today, the 2021 is the smarter buy, especially if you can find a clean, well-equipped example. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2022 is the path to consider for buyers who want a slightly fresher take on the same core strengths.
