CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 209 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,916, 34.0% of 2022 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
97.6% of 2022 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality. Even with its polarizing exterior design, it exudes quality and offers exceptional value, which gives it a clear identity in a segment where many shoppers are focused on familiar nameplates. It also brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty, all of which strengthen its appeal for buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver.
Its strengths are especially important because the Sonata is competing in a crowded field and doing so at a time when interest in midsize sedans has been waning. The car’s surprisingly sporty N Line variant adds another layer of distinction, giving the Sonata a more engaging side without abandoning its practical mission. The main drawbacks are straightforward: the design may not appeal to everyone, and all-wheel drive is not available.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.75/5 user-rated car with an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Sonata’s appeal comes through clearly in the data: it leans hard into value and quality, offers a quiet cabin, and brings a great warranty to a crowded midsize-sedan segment. It also gives you a practical daily-driver setup with a spacious cabin and standard advanced safety features, while the N Line adds a more engaging option if you want extra personality.
The main trade-offs are straightforward: the design may be polarizing, and all-wheel drive is not available. The expert notes also point to a split personality between the calm mainstream trims and the more aggressive N Line, so your satisfaction depends on whether you want comfort-first transportation or a sportier edge.
With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s reliability case is supported by its strong value positioning, quiet cabin, and excellent warranty coverage. The expert data also describes the car as competent in ride, handling, and noise control, which matters because a well-sorted daily driver tends to age better in real-world use.
The performance notes reinforce that the mainstream powertrains are straightforward and not overly complicated, with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder and the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder both paired to an eight-speed automatic. The cost-effectiveness data also highlights three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from higher-mileage commuting.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident history, title status, and prior use. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, electronics, tires, brakes, and suspension, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the car was treated. You should also focus on trim-specific equipment so you know whether the car has the safety and tech features you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gives you the essentials, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. The SEL is the key step-up if you want more everyday features, and the Limited brings the most upscale equipment. The N Line is the sportier choice, while the N Line Night Edition adds appearance-focused upgrades.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder is paired with an eight-speed automatic and is described as calm and adequate. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder also uses an eight-speed automatic, while the N Line’s turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder brings 290 hp, a wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
- Safety package: All 2022 Sonatas include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base SE versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD Radio, and a rearview camera. SEL Plus, Limited, and both N Line trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, wireless device charging, and dynamic voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA combined figure ranges from 32 mpg on the SE to 27 mpg on the N Line. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited all return 31 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you a strong equipment list for the money, including an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, and standard safety tech. If you want the lowest entry price and don’t need luxury extras, this is the trim to start with.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a meaningful step up in comfort and safety equipment, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and satellite radio. It also becomes the trim to consider if you want the Convenience package.
- SEL Plus: This is the right pick if you want a more premium feel without jumping all the way to the top trims. It adds the 10.25-inch navigation system, Bose audio, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Limited: This is the most upscale mainstream trim, with leather seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance. It’s the trim to buy if comfort and convenience matter more than price.
- N Line: This is the one to choose if you want the sportiest Sonata. It adds the 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, tuned exhaust, and unique styling and cabin details.
- N Line Night Edition: This is for you if you want the N Line’s performance and a darker, more distinctive look. It adds matte black wheels, red brake calipers, dark chrome badging, and other appearance upgrades.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the SEL and Limited trims add the most useful extra driver-assistance and parking features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,974 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,670, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $19,670 sits slightly below last year's $21,329.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside left than a shopper who paid closer to last year’s average.
The model’s strong value story and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used buyers, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim with the features shoppers want. A car that combines strong equipment, a good reputation for value, and solid satisfaction tends to stay easier to move later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns five-star overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for frontal crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sonata comes with a comprehensive standard safety package that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
One caveat is that IIHS has not rated the 2022 model for crashworthiness, so you’re relying more heavily on NHTSA results and the standard equipment list when evaluating safety.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 stands out for its value-first approach, quiet cabin, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,123, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,670 average.
- It emphasizes practical performance and passenger/cargo usefulness in a bargain-priced sport-sedan package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2022 is the better target because it combines a lower current average price than last year, strong safety equipment, and broad trim choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget path, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s market freshness.
