Why it stands out
The 2021 Honda Odyssey stands out as a freshened minivan that brings improved safety, upgraded technology, enhanced utility, and spruced-up styling. It is aimed squarely at family buyers who want a vehicle that reduces daily friction, whether the priority is carrying cargo, loading passengers, or simply making life easier. That combination of practical purpose and updated presentation is a big part of its appeal.
Inside, the Odyssey’s strengths are its spacious cabin and spacious third row, which make it especially well suited to families that need room to spread out. Its stylish design also helps it feel less purely utilitarian than many people expect from a minivan. Owners echo that family-friendly focus, praising its space, safety features, and drivability.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 2021 Honda Odyssey is not available as a hybrid, it is not as luxurious as its competitors, and all-wheel drive is not available. Even so, for buyers who value space, ease of use, and a well-rounded family vehicle, it remains an appealing choice.

Car is great. Handles well and has space. Great family car. Steering wheel could use a motorized function for adjusting height and distance. Power 3rd row seats could be cool as well.

Love the vehicle! Just don’t care for the darker color wheels.

This is my 3rd Honda Odyssey, so the car works well for me. I’d still like to see a modification to fold the seats into the floor (like the Chrysler Pacifica) now that Chrysler/Dodge’s patent on that design has expired. At least the 2nd row seats come completely out - they are just really heavy and awkward to move. I miss the compartment under the center dashboard - it was nice storage. I also miss the blind spot camera that I had in my 2014 that gave you a view for lane changing.

Owners consistently praise its space, safety features, and great drivability, and they also highlight the family-friendly features that make daily use easier. The expert review reinforces that use case, pointing to a minivan designed to reduce friction when you’re carrying cargo, loading passengers, or managing busy family routines.
The main trade-offs are that it is not available as a hybrid and all-wheel drive is not available. It also isn’t as luxurious as some rivals, so if your priorities lean toward efficiency or premium finishes, you may want to compare alternatives.
Even so, for family buyers who want a practical, easy-to-live-with minivan, the Odyssey’s combination of space and usability remains compelling. With 33.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2021 Honda Odyssey reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free in the ways that matter most to families, especially when it comes to everyday usefulness and confidence over time. The expert review also describes the V6 and automatic transmission as a terrific combination that delivers smooth, effortless power, which supports the impression of a well-sorted drivetrain.
The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that the Odyssey is a bargain in terms of utility and practicality compared with larger vehicles that can’t match its passenger comfort or cargo space. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a minivan used for family duty can accumulate wear quickly, so condition matters more than mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Honda Odyssey?
At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage family hauler. Focus on signs of body repair, interior wear, and how well the cabin features and sliding-seat functionality work in real use. Because this model is often chosen for family duty, condition can vary a lot from one example to the next.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX gets standard LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation and Honda Sensing, while higher trims add more upscale materials and features. The EX-L, Touring, and Elite bring progressively richer cabin appointments, with the Elite adding perforated leather upholstery with contrast stitching and piping, plus dashboard ambient lighting.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a ten-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. The engine makes 280 horsepower, includes variable cylinder management, and is tuned for smooth, effortless power rather than sporty character.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on the base LX and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, pedestrian braking, road-sign recognition, and a dashboard menu button for ADAS settings. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning requires at least EX trim.
- Infotainment: Starting with EX trim, you get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, text-messaging support, basic HondaLink connectivity, and the Cabin Control smartphone app. Touring adds navigation, WiFi capability, CabinWatch, and CabinTalk, while Elite adds an 11-speaker premium sound system, multi-zone listening, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Fuel efficiency: The Odyssey should get 22 mpg in combined driving, and the expert test drive returned 21.8 mpg on its loop.
Which 2021 Honda Odyssey trim should I buy?
The 2021 Honda Odyssey is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the value entry point if you want the Odyssey’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get standard LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation and Honda Sensing, so it covers the essentials well.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the Cabin Control app. It also unlocks blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, which makes it a smart step up for family buyers.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and more comfort-focused equipment without jumping all the way to the tech-heavy upper trims. It builds on the EX formula with a more premium feel.
- Touring: This is the trim to target if you want the Odyssey’s most family-friendly tech, including navigation, WiFi capability, CabinWatch, CabinTalk, and the rear-seat entertainment system. It suits buyers who spend a lot of time on road trips.
- Elite: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious version of the Odyssey, with perforated leather upholstery, ambient lighting, an 11-speaker premium sound system, multi-zone listening, and wireless smartphone charging.
Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning is not standard on the base LX and requires at least EX trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Honda Odyssey?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,331 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,325, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Honda Odyssey's resale value?
The current average of $26,582 sits slightly below last year's $28,170.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Odyssey has become more approachable for buyers, which can help support demand in the near term. For a future seller, that means you may not see the same pricing strength that existed a year ago, but a well-kept example can still hold appeal because it remains a practical family vehicle with broad usefulness.
The market also shows that shoppers are still responding to the model’s space, safety, and drivability. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Honda Odyssey safe?
The 2021 Honda Odyssey earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment aside from rollover resistance, for which it earns a four-star score.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, pedestrian braking, road-sign recognition, and a dashboard menu button for quick ADAS access. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning still requires at least EX trim, so the base LX leaves that feature off the standard list.
The safety system works accurately, though the expert review notes that adaptive cruise control can brake a bit unevenly and the lane-departure warning can feel overly intrusive. Even with those caveats, the Odyssey’s safety package is a major strength for family buyers.
Should I buy a 2021 Honda Odyssey or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 brings improved safety, upgraded technology, and refreshed styling.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $29,571, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,582 average.
- It keeps the Odyssey’s enjoyable driving character while carrying forward the familiar formula.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and the model still delivers the core family-friendly strengths that matter most. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2021’s broader affordability.
