Why it stands out
The 2021 Audi Q5 stands out because it brings a plug-in hybrid option to Audi’s top-selling vehicle. Audi’s electrification push shows up here in the form of a PHEV powertrain, and the Q5 has offered that setup since 2020. For buyers who want a luxury compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive, the Q5 also has a strong practical appeal.
Beyond its electrified powertrain, the 2021 Audi Q5 is appealing for its comfort and impressive technology. Those strengths help it feel polished and easy to live with, even if its styling is uninspired. There are also some drawbacks to keep in mind: the interior materials can feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard.

So I decided to go with the Premium Plus trim as it has most of the bells and whistles that I wanted. Blown away by the tech in the car specially if you get the Audi Virtual Cockpit with Nav. On the other hand, the acceleration was a bit disappointing IMHO.

for a sporty AWD wagon when I decided to test drive a Q5. I loved the way it drove and the technology package included with the trim level. It is a smooth drive with precise driving (for an SUV) and felt powerful when I wanted/needed it.

Is the 2021 Audi Q5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Q5’s appeal is rooted in its refined, upscale feel and practical everyday use, and the plug-in hybrid setup adds another layer of versatility. Its performance notes point to a convincing powertrain with efficient hybrid operation, and the ability to recharge overnight or on Level 2 power makes ownership more manageable if you can charge at home. The available tax-credit support also helps offset some of the cost of ownership.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is making sure the battery-equipped powertrain and charging-related features are working as intended before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Audi Q5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a plug-in hybrid where charging behavior and overall condition matter. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, confirm that the technology features operate correctly, and make sure the vehicle has been maintained consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Q5 PHEV is offered in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The cabin is classy and modern, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, standard leather seating surfaces, and a clean layout, but the base model does not include navigation. The Prestige trim adds more equipment, while the Premium Plus sits in the middle for buyers who want a stronger feature mix without going all the way to the top.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 14.1-kWh battery for 362 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. It can drive on battery power alone for up to 20 miles depending on conditions, and it delivers 65 MPGe combined or 27 mpg combined in gasoline-only mode.
- Safety package: Audi Pre Sense basic is standard, along with six airbags, brake assist, low-speed collision assist, rear child safety locks, stability control, a rearview camera, and TPMS. Available driver-assistance features include Audi Side Assist with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, park steering assist, traffic-sign recognition, and a top-view camera system. Advanced safety features are not standard.
- Infotainment: You get Audi’s MMI 10.1-inch touchscreen, the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, and an integrated toll module standard on all models. Navigation is available on Premium Plus and included with Prestige.
- Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid is rated at 65 MPGe combined and 27 mpg combined in gasoline-only mode.
Which 2021 Audi Q5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Audi Q5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige.
Here's the short version:
- Premium: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core plug-in hybrid experience with standard all-wheel drive, the 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and the basic luxury feel that makes the Q5 appealing. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the PHEV model, but you’ll miss some of the richer convenience and tech upgrades found higher up.
- Premium Plus: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more of the equipment that makes the Q5 feel fully modern, including the option for navigation. If you want a stronger mix of technology and convenience without paying top-trim money, this is the trim to target.
- Prestige: This is the most fully equipped version, and it includes navigation plus the standard Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system. Choose this if you want the most upscale Q5 PHEV experience and are willing to pay for it.
Advanced safety features are not standard, so check carefully for the driver-assistance equipment you want on any trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Audi Q5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 38.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,246 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,493, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Audi Q5's resale value?
The current average of $21,494 sits slightly below last year's $24,602.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The plug-in hybrid setup and upscale feature content should still help it remain appealing to shoppers who want a luxury SUV with added efficiency.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Audi Q5 safe?
The 2021 Q5 PHEV hasn’t been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety yet, but the 2020 Q5 received top “good” ratings in every category except headlights, where it received a “marginal” rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 2021 Audi Q5 gasoline model five-star ratings, but has not yet rated the PHEV.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Audi Pre Sense basic is standard, and the Q5 also includes six airbags, brake assist, low-speed collision assist, rear child safety locks, stability control, a rearview camera, and TPMS. Available driver-assistance features include Audi Side Assist with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, park steering assist, traffic-sign recognition, and a top-view camera system.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify exactly which driver-assistance items are fitted on the used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Audi Q5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 38.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Audi’s electrification push shows up here in the form of a PHEV powertrain, and the Q5 has offered that setup since 2020.
The bottom line: The 2021 Q5 makes the most sense if you want the plug-in hybrid version, strong technology, and a luxury compact SUV that feels polished in daily use. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can shop carefully for a lower-priced example in the current market, but the 2021 is the right pick when you want the PHEV setup and a well-equipped cabin.
