How much does the 2020 Subaru Legacy cost?

Prices have softened 12.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 507 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

It stands out as a practical midsize sedan with standard all-wheel drive, strong value for money, and a clear focus on efficiency and safety. The trade-offs are that its technology can be unintuitive and the base engine is underwhelming, so it fits you best if you want a sensible daily driver rather than a sedan built around polish or excitement.

30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Legacy’s reliability story is tied to its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and safety-first setup. Its performance content also points to a responsive transmission and a chassis that feels surprisingly good, while the cost-effectiveness content reinforces that it was positioned as a value-oriented sedan from the start.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the technology can be frustrating to live with, so you should make sure every major control works the way you expect before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a car with incomplete service records. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the tech and driver-assistance systems operate correctly during a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim comes with remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, dual 7-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, voice recognition, Subaru EyeSight, and 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers. Higher trims add features such as the 11.6-inch touchscreen, alloy wheels, a power moonroof, heated seats, heated mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer, adaptive LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats.
• Powertrain: The base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trims use a 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, routed through a CVT with manual mode and paddle shifters. Limited XT and Touring XT models use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer 4-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. It also adds an alert when the car ahead starts moving. Standard safety equipment also includes front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: The Legacy uses a massive 11.6-inch touchscreen on most trims, while the base trim gets dual 7-inch touchscreens. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system also has over-the-air update capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. The turbocharged engine returns 24 city, 32 highway, and 27 combined.

Which 2020 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want standard all-wheel drive, Subaru EyeSight, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core comfort and safety equipment. It gives you the essentials, but it also leaves you with the simpler dual-screen setup and fewer convenience features than the higher trims.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, 17-inch alloy wheels, four USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, a standard power moonroof, and the All-Weather Package with heated seats, heated mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and everyday livability.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a few extra style touches. It adds 18-inch alloys, a trunk spoiler, a more aggressive front fascia, LED fog lights, red contrast stitching, leather dash cladding, and aluminum alloy pedal covers.
• Limited: This is the comfort-focused upgrade if you want more premium features without stepping into turbo power. It adds adaptive LED headlights, auto power up/down for all four windows, an 8-way power front passenger seat, driver memory settings, perforated leather upholstery, and heated rear seats.
• Limited XT: Pick this if you want the turbocharged engine plus a few extra upgrades over the Limited. It adds dual tailpipes, a distracted-driving monitor, and a heated steering wheel.
• Touring XT: This is the top-end choice if you want the most upscale version of the Legacy. It adds power-folding exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, full Nappa leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Subaru EyeSight is standard across the lineup, so you don’t have to move up for the core safety suite.

What is the 2020 Subaru Legacy's resale value?

The current average of $17,265 sits slightly below last year's $19,701.

That price movement suggests the Legacy has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier for you to attract interest if you sell at the right price. The current market also shows that shoppers are still responding to its value, standard all-wheel drive, and safety focus.

If you own one and keep it in good condition, the combination of practical appeal and strong buyer interest can help support resale value. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model year pairs standard all-wheel drive with strong value and standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,376, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,265 average.
• It adds a more refined take on the same standard AWD, comfort, efficiency, and safety formula.

The bottom line: If you want the better price and a strong value proposition, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
