Is the 2020 Lexus ES a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 owner-rated luxury sedan with an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the quiet cabin, smooth driving experience, luxury feel, and extensive safety features. That lines up well with the ES’s comfort-first mission, since it’s aimed at buyers who want a serene commuter and long-distance cruiser rather than something flashy or sporty. The main trade-offs are that it comes at a higher price than some rivals and its performance is fairly pedestrian.

With 40.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop carefully and find value.

Is the 2020 Lexus ES reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers repeatedly highlighting the car’s dependable feel, quiet cabin, and comfort over the long haul. The expert evaluation also reinforces that this is a sedan built for everyday ease and long-term use, with a calm, refined driving character that suits commuting and road trips. Lexus also includes a comprehensive safety suite as standard, which adds to the sense of confidence you can count on.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Lexus ES?

At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on the condition of the cabin, electronics, and safety systems, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on refinement and feature content. If you’re comparing multiple listings, pay close attention to maintenance records and how well the car’s comfort-focused equipment has held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 350 FWD base trim includes a power moonroof, synthetic leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity entry, push-button start, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add leather, woodgrain trim, ambient lighting, hands-free trunk access, semi-aniline leather, and rear sunshades, so the base car is the one to scrutinize if you want the most upscale feel.
• Powertrain: The ES uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s tuned for confident acceleration and relaxed commuting rather than excitement, and the F Sport adds a more engaging feel with available adaptive variable suspension and paddle shifters.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, and lane-tracing assist. That standard coverage is a major strength across the lineup.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8-inch display, with an available 12.3-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system can be paired with a 10-speaker premium audio system or an available 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo. It is not a touchscreen, so make sure you’re comfortable with the Remote Touch interface.
• Fuel efficiency: The ES 350 returns 22/32/26 mpg, and the ES 350 F Sport returns 22/31/25 mpg.

Which 2020 Lexus ES trim should I buy?

The 2020 Lexus ES is offered in 4 trim levels: 350 FWD, Luxury, Ultra Luxury, and F Sport.

Here's the short version:

• 350 FWD: This is the value play if you want the ES experience at the lowest entry price. You still get the core comfort and tech features, including the standard safety suite, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the 8-inch display.
• Luxury: This trim is the best middle ground if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping all the way to the top of the range. The added leather, woodgrain trim, ambient lighting, and included Premium Package content make it the sweet spot for many shoppers.
• Ultra Luxury: Choose this if you want the most pampering version of the ES. The hands-free trunk, semi-aniline leather, rear sunshade, and additional comfort touches make it the most indulgent trim.
• F Sport: This is the pick if you want the most distinctive styling and a slightly more engaging driving feel. It adds unique exterior and interior details, but it still isn’t a true performance sedan.

The standard safety package is a major advantage across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up trims to get strong driver-assistance coverage.

What is the 2020 Lexus ES's resale value?

The current average of $29,207 sits slightly below last year's $29,352.

That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is generally a good sign if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern can help you avoid sharp depreciation swings, especially if you buy at a fair price and keep the car in strong condition. Should I buy a 2020 Lexus ES or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 40.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the ES’s comfort-first formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $30,952, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $29,207 average.
• It adds more flexibility with multiple powertrain options.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing is stable, inventory is healthy, and owner satisfaction is excellent. If you’re willing to spend more for broader powertrain choice, the 2021 is the better alternative.

How does the 2020 Lexus ES compare to the 2020 Toyota Avalon?

2020 Lexus ES:

• Pros: Premium interior materials, Standard advanced safety features.
• Cons: Not much cargo space, Fairly pedestrian performance.

2020 Toyota Avalon:

• Pros: Great safety ratings, Standard advanced safety features, Spacious.
• Cons: Poor value for money.

Our experts score the 2020 Lexus ES 8/10 and the 2020 Toyota Avalon 7.7/10. The Lexus ES leans harder into premium materials and a more upscale cabin, while the Avalon counters with more space and strong safety ratings. Both offer standard advanced safety features, but the ES is the better pick if you care more about refinement than cargo room. The Avalon makes more sense if you want a roomier sedan and can live with weaker value.
