CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Chevrolet Equinox
overall

Summary
With 399 currently listed for sale near Baltimore, MD and an average price of $16,776.00, 39.6% of 2020 Chevrolet Equinoxes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox 4.24 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
78.7% of 2020 Equinox models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a straightforward compact crossover built to make everyday driving easier rather than more exciting. It serves buyers who want more foul-weather capability, more cargo space, and a higher driving position than a Malibu midsize sedan can provide, and it comes in L, LS, LT, and Premier trim levels. For 2020, Chevrolet also added a Midnight Edition appearance package for LT trim and three new colors.
What stands out most about the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is how well it covers the basics. The standard advanced safety features and easy-to-use technology make it appealing as a practical daily driver, and owners often praise its comfort, fuel economy, and value for money. At the same time, it is not the choice for shoppers seeking excitement: the test-drive data calls out fairly pedestrian performance and poor value for money, and owner feedback also points to limited standard equipment on lower trims, a cheap-feeling interior, and power concerns.

This car is just the right size for me! It’s a great value for the money. I purchased one with very low mileage. It’s an LT, All Wheel Drive, 2.0 liter engine, 9 speed transmission, and a Factory Trailer Hitch. So far it’s giving me over 33 miles per gallon highway and over 26 mpg in the city. The ride is soft but firm. I have plenty of room to haul things with the back seats folded down! I like this car a lot, and would buy it again!

1. Remote start on the key fob doesn’t work 2. Tires sensors are not functional 3. The hood keeps flapping at 70mph 4. Engine light is on 5. Traction light is on 6. Tires low pressure lights are on 7. Change oil light is on 8. Hydraulic and wiper tanks cannot hold fluid That vehicle is not safe to drive, not road worthy and I will be surprised if it passes inspection

I got this car less than a week ago. I got the premium 2.0 model with the panoramic roof and ventilated seats. The features are very good, I got the 2 tone leather interior which is also very sharp. The 2.0 turbo engine feels as good as if not more powerful than my V6 in my Jeep Cherokee I had prior. There is a ton of space in this vehicle for this size category. It runs quiet and smooth, the cabin is quiet also. It seems to be going through gas quickly so the verdict is out on gas mileage. The electric seats give endless settings, however I havent been able to find my comfortable spot yet for some reason. This car had better reliability ratings than other vehicles I looked at and offered a lot of features you would see in a Lincoln or higher end car for the money.

How much does the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,670 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,535.77 |
| Year-Round High | $17,049.73 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,051 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.10% |
Prices have softened 8.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,954 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,535.77, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.24/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.67/10. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, fuel economy, and value for money, and they also point to good features for the price. The trade-offs are familiar: lower trims can feel short on standard equipment, and some owners mention a cheap-feeling interior and limited power.
That lines up with the Equinox’s role as a practical daily driver rather than an exciting one, especially if you want more cargo space and a higher driving position than a Malibu midsize sedan can provide. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox reliable?
Owners rate it 4.24/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle you can count on for comfort and everyday usefulness, with recurring praise for its dependable feel, fuel economy, and value. The expert drive notes also reinforce that it’s built as a straightforward commuter rather than a high-strung machine, which usually helps long-term ownership feel less stressful.
Chevrolet also includes a free first maintenance visit, which is a small but welcome ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure you avoid examples that have been neglected or overpromised on condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Equinox?
At 67.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: L, LS, LT, and Premier are the trims called out for this model year. Lower trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more standard equipment, while Premier is positioned with the most upscale appearance and features.
- Powertrain: The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, while the available 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder makes 252 hp and 260 lb-ft and is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration or the maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
- Safety package: Chevy Safety Assist is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, a safe following distance monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, and a Safety Alert Seat are available depending on trim.
- Infotainment: Systems use 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreens and include Bluetooth for two devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and Chevrolet Connected Access services. Higher trims add a high-definition display, cloud connectivity, improved voice recognition, HD Radio, satellite radio, navigation, and a Bose premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.5-liter engine averaged 24.3 mpg in AWD form, versus an EPA combined rating of 28 mpg. The 2.0-liter turbo averaged 22.1 mpg, versus an EPA combined rating of 24 mpg.
Which 2020 Chevrolet Equinox trim should I buy?
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LS, LT, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the simplest way into the Equinox lineup, so it makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price down and you’re comfortable with a more basic setup.
- LS: This trim adds a more usable everyday balance, and it’s the one that best fits shoppers who want the Equinox’s core strengths without stretching too far on price.
- LT: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it opens the door to more equipment and also gets the Midnight Edition appearance package for 2020.
- Premier: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale look and the fullest feature set, including the more premium cabin presentation and available stronger engine.
Chevy Safety Assist is standard across the lineup, but some driver-assistance upgrades still depend on trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Chevrolet Equinox?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,954 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,535.77, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox's resale value?
The current average of $15,670 sits slightly below last year's $17,051.
That price movement suggests the Equinox has softened enough to be attractive to used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pain later.
The model’s broad appeal as a practical compact crossover should help keep demand steady, especially for shoppers who value comfort, fuel economy, and everyday usability. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.24/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox safe?
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2020 Equinox is a Top Safety Pick. In tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2020 Equinox earns five-star ratings in each evaluation, plus a four-star rating for rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevy Safety Assist is standard on every 2020 Equinox, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, a safe following distance monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights. A reversing camera, rear-seat reminder, and Teen Driver technology are also standard.
Some additional driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, and a Safety Alert Seat, depend on trim level. Chevy also notes that blind-spot warning should be more accessible, which points to a real usability gap in the lineup.
Should I buy a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.24/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard Chevy Safety Assist with easy-to-use tech and a practical, everyday-driving focus.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $14,303, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $15,670 average.
- It adds clearer visibility with updated cameras and a refreshed infotainment setup.
The bottom line: If you want the better all-around shopping mix, the 2020 is the stronger pick because it pairs a lower average price with broad safety and tech appeal. If your main goal is saving money upfront, the 2019 is worth a look, especially if you find one with the right equipment and condition.
