Summary
With 312 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,023, 29.5% of 2019 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical hybrid that checks a lot of boxes for everyday buyers. It is described as reliable, efficient, affordable, practical, and safe, and it is also noted as decent to drive. For shoppers focused on value and fuel savings, those strengths make it an easy car to understand.
Toyota also made a few notable changes for 2019, including toning down the design, revising the trim-level strategy, and adding a new electric all-wheel-drive option. That helps broaden the Prius’ appeal beyond its core efficiency mission. At the same time, its styling remains a drawback, and the technology is described as outdated, so the car’s strengths are balanced by a couple of clear compromises.

The 2019 Prius is an excellent car. Great mileage and a very comfortable ride. In our Prius XLE, we get about 52 mpg. We have been driving the Toyota Prius brand for over 5 years. Great choice. Lots of features but the sound system is excellent and we can run Youtube and Spotify through the car as well as all phone calls.

Great mileage and surprisingly has power and acceleration if Normal or Power mode is selected. The Eco mode sustains well and for cruising on highway or city is sufficient! Very Happy

| Year-Round Low | $17,995 |
| Year-Round High | $20,056 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,411 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.32% |
Prices are up 3.32% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
With 302 listings available, you have a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, reliability, comfort for daily driving, and helpful features. The expert review also frames it as reliable, efficient, affordable, practical, and safe, which fits a shopper looking for an easy-to-understand daily driver.
The trade-offs are clear: styling is polarizing, and the technology feels outdated. Even so, the Prius is positioned as a practical hybrid for value-focused buyers who care more about savings and usability than flash.
Only 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, trouble-free ownership, and confidence in the car over the long haul. The expert review also describes it as historically reliable and trouble-free, which reinforces the idea that this is a model built for steady use rather than drama.
The cost-effectiveness review adds that Prius ownership makes logical and financial sense, which matters if you want a used hybrid that should be easier to live with over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the basic hybrid formula and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Prius is valued for efficiency and low-stress ownership, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-maintained example is the one most likely to deliver the experience you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L Eco to Limited, and the base trim is the most stripped-down choice. Higher trims add more convenience and tech, while the Limited stands out for its more advanced infotainment and premium audio.
- Powertrain: A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motor make 121 horsepower. The optional electric AWD system adds a rear motor for extra traction at low speeds and in slippery conditions, but it also reduces fuel economy.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a CD player. The Limited trim gets an 11.6-inch split-screen display, navigation, the Entune App Suite, a premium JBL sound system, satellite radio, and Safety Connect subscription services. Neither system includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: A standard front-drive Prius gets 52 mpg combined, or 56 mpg in L Eco trim. The AWD-e version gets 50 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it makes the most sense if your priority is maximizing fuel economy and keeping the purchase simple.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful safety equipment like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors without jumping to the top of the range.
- XLE: This trim is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay more for added comfort and available AWD-e.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the largest infotainment screen, navigation, JBL audio, and Safety Connect, so it suits you if you want the most technology and convenience.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every trim, while Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 302 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.32% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,995, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $20,056 sits slightly above last year's $19,411.
That upward move suggests the Prius is holding value reasonably well for a used hybrid. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, the combination of steady demand and strong fuel-economy appeal should help support resale later.
The market also shows that buyers still respond to this model year’s practical strengths, which can help keep it relevant when you decide to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2019 Toyota Prius earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash. It also earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, though small overlap front passenger frontal impact protection is rated Acceptable instead of Good.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every Prius and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist, while Safety Connect is limited to the Limited trim.
The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap result, which is a reminder to pay attention to crash-test nuance rather than just the headline score.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.32% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds a new electric all-wheel-drive option for 2019.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,622, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $20,056 average.
- It broadens the Prius’ appeal with stronger hybrid standard-bearer positioning and more emphasis on versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the smarter target because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a lower average price than the next model year. If you can stretch for a newer example and want to compare broader hybrid positioning, the 2020 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2019.
