overall

Summary
With 1,879 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,771.00, 31.8% of 2018 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out by shifting Volkswagen’s compact SUV formula toward everyday usefulness. It adds 58 percent more cargo space, and Volkswagen also focused on backseat room, the option of a third row, and the latest in-car and safety technology. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more versatile and family-friendly than before.
That added practicality comes with a tradeoff. The Tiguan also loses some of the driving excitement that once made Volkswagens special, so it is less about personality and more about meeting the core needs of crossover shoppers. Even so, the combination of a spacious interior, useful features, and a comfortable ride helps explain why owners tend to value it highly.

Best vehicle for several features for safety, durability, and price. Great vehicle and great gas mileage. The only thing missing in the car is air conditioned seats. I would definitely buy another one.

Really great car for the value. Super tidy SUV with 3rd row seating, highly recommend going for the SEL for the interior package. Electronics are great, only minor downside is apple car play only works if youre plugged in via USB. Otherwise, very happy with the car and value.

The infotainment system is awesome. Great ride, this car is definitely up their with the Audi Q3 actually it has more initial power than the Q3. I don’t think the car is missing anything, just a all around great vehicle. So happy I purchased it.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling SUV with a roomy cabin, comfortable ride, and features that make it easy to live with every day. The expert evaluation also frames it as a vehicle aimed at the mass market, with space and features that suit daily driving and weekend trips.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy family use or neglected service.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the interior and mechanical condition match the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. The SE adds keyless access with push-button start, dual-zone Climatronic climate control, a leather multi-function steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control. The SEL adds remote start, a third USB port, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a one-touch power liftgate. The SEL Premium adds ambient lighting, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 9-speaker Fender premium audio system.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and front-wheel drive or 4Motion AWD. The expert notes that acceleration is sluggish in normal driving and that Sport mode is the only way to get anywhere in a hurry.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, and the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
- Infotainment: The Tiguan offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the base S and an 8-inch touchscreen on the SE and above. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the SEL Premium adds the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD Tiguan is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined. The 4Motion version is rated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Tiguan, but you give up some important safety tech because forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are optional here rather than standard. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are willing to be selective about equipment.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds key convenience and comfort upgrades like push-button start, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen with voice control. It also gets the standard safety tech that is optional on the S.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver with navigation, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, remote start, and a power liftgate. It is the right middle ground if you want more comfort and driver-assistance features without going all the way to the top trim.
- SEL Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, adding leather seating, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, a 360-degree camera, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and the Fender audio system. It suits you best if you want the most premium Tiguan experience.
The safety package is optional on the S trim and standard on all other trims.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $12,749 sits slightly below last year's $13,834.
That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-kept example with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model emphasizes cargo space, backseat room, a third-row option, and the latest in-car and safety technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Tiguan’s roomier, more family-friendly formula and you can find a clean, well-priced example, the 2018 is the year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully and compare condition, equipment, and accident history before deciding.
