Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan that adds a welcome dose of sportiness to a model long known more for practicality than excitement. Volkswagen gave it an upgraded 4-cylinder engine, and the lineup also gained a new GT trim with a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination makes the 2018 Passat more appealing to buyers who want a roomy, mainstream sedan with a little more character than before.
Even with those updates, the Passat is still described as a competitive option in the midsize segment, though it is also noted as getting a little long in the tooth. Buyers looking for added peace of mind can equip the base S trim with advanced safety systems such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. Owners also commonly praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, while some note the absence of features like memory seats and a HomeLink system and mention that the steering can feel soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

With 695 listings available, you have a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space. They also highlight its great value for money, peppy acceleration, and smooth ride.
That lines up with the Passat’s use case as a roomy, mainstream midsize sedan with a little more character than before. In the market, 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing the car as a strong value that they can count on over time. On the road, the upgraded 4-cylinder engine is described as smoother and more eager to rev, which supports the impression of a well-sorted daily driver.
Volkswagen also positions the Passat as a practical, competitive midsize sedan with a very competitive price point, which helps reinforce its long-term appeal. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and still feels fresh.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or mismatched trim. Focus on condition first, because the market includes a mix of cleaner cars and examples with prior damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks VW’s Car-Net App-Connect. Higher trims add features like heated seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and real leather, so the value jump depends on how much equipment you want.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the available 3.6-liter V6 delivers 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and returns 19/28/22 mpg. The V6 adds more punch, but the 4-cylinder is the efficiency play.
- Safety package: The base S can be equipped with the Driver Assistance package, which adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking are standard on the GT, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: Most trims get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the S and a 6.3-inch touchscreen on the R-Line, while the Technology Package upgrades the setup further and adds navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value entry point if you want the lowest starting price and the core Passat experience. You get the basics covered, but you’ll want the Driver Assistance package if safety tech matters to you, and the lack of App-Connect is the biggest everyday drawback.
- R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more comfort and a sportier look without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it keeps the R-Line’s equipment and adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. If you want a well-rounded Passat, this is the trim to target first.
- SEL Premium: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with real leather, a power passenger seat, a Fender stereo, memory seating, and available V6 power. It makes sense if you want the most comfort and convenience features.
- GT: This is the enthusiast pick, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches. Choose it if you want the most character and the strongest performance.
The safety package on the base S is a smart add-on, and the GT and SEL Premium bring their own important safety equipment depending on how you configure them.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 695 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,258 sits slightly below last year's $12,347.
That small decline suggests the Passat has been holding value in a fairly stable way rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually means you should expect gradual depreciation instead of a sudden drop.
The market also appears balanced enough that condition and equipment will matter a lot when you go to sell. A cleaner car with desirable features should stand out more than a higher-mileage example with fewer options.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking are available on the base S through the Driver Assistance package, and they are standard on the GT. Lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
The main safety caveat is the Marginal IIHS performance, so you should pay close attention to crash history, lighting condition, and whether the car has the driver-assistance equipment you want.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen added an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,525, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,258 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, App-Connect, and forward-collision warning with autonomous braking across more of the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Passat with the upgraded engine and GT option, the 2018 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less and getting a simpler sedan with useful standard safety and smartphone features, the 2017 is the smarter value play.
