How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat cost?

There are 684 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, impressive trunk space, peppy acceleration, smooth ride, and strong value for money. For you, that means this is a practical midsize sedan that still brings a little more character than many rivals.

The Passat is aimed at shoppers who want a roomy, mainstream sedan with useful everyday comfort and a bit of sportiness. In the market, 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for the car’s roomy cabin, comfortable seating, and strong value. That kind of satisfaction usually matters most when you’re looking for a used sedan you can count on over time.

The expert notes also support that impression by describing the Passat as a competitive midsize option with a smoother, more eager base engine and a well-sorted ride. On the cost side, the model’s competitive pricing helps keep ownership appealing, and the available safety package on the base trim adds useful peace of mind.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about finding a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, feature operation, and whether the car has the safety and convenience equipment you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The R-Line adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling, while the SE adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. The SEL Premium adds real leather, a power passenger seat, a memory system, and an automatic parallel parking system.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and the available 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 4-cylinder is the efficiency play, while the V6 brings stronger performance and a more engaging character.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Those features are especially important if you’re considering the base S trim, since they are not standard there.
• Infotainment: The base S gets a 5-inch touchscreen, while the R-Line steps up to a 6.3-inch screen and the SE Technology Package brings an upgraded infotainment system with navigation. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on nearly all trims, but not on the base S.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value-focused starting point, but you should strongly consider the Driver Assistance package if you want blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest entry price and are willing to add key safety tech.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated seats, heated side mirrors, V-Tex leatherette, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more comfort and a nicer cabin without jumping all the way to the top.
• SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. If you want the most useful everyday upgrades, this is the trim to target.
• SEL Premium: This is the luxury-leaning choice with real leather, a power passenger seat, a memory system, and an automatic parallel parking system. It suits you best if you want the most comfort and convenience features.
• GT: This is the enthusiast pick, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches. Choose it if you want the most character and the strongest performance.

The safety package on the base S is a smart add-on, and the GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 684 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.34% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,303 sits slightly below last year's $12,470.

That modest decline suggests the Passat has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing has been stable enough to avoid a sharp drop, but not strong enough to suggest rapid appreciation.

The model’s broad appeal as a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan should help it remain easy to market. Strong value perception and a healthy supply of listings can also support steady demand when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it does not earn a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS because of Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and that package is especially useful on the base S trim.

One caveat is that adaptive cruise control is not available here, and the lane-departure warning system is limited to the SEL Premium. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim level and package content.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.34% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,643, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,303 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, App Connect, and forward-collision warning with autonomous braking above the base S.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Passat, the 2018 is the stronger pick because it adds more performance character and keeps the model competitive. If your priority is saving money and you still want a roomy, comfortable sedan with useful safety and smartphone features, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly path.
