Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty a good car?

Generally — the 4.15/5 user rating and 8/10 expert rating point to a truck that satisfies owners and earns strong editorial marks. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty reliable?

User feedback highlights reliability, and it also points to the diesel engine’s strength as a reason owners feel confident in the truck over time. The expert material reinforces that this is a truck built to do hard work, take a beating, and keep moving for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Ford also notes that the truck’s capability and tech are designed to help with towing, parking, and other ownership tasks rather than get in the way. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that heavy-duty trucks often live hard lives, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck was used for towing, hauling, or work-site duty. Focus on wear items, signs of hard use, and whether the truck’s condition matches its mileage and price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The base trim is the most utilitarian, while higher trims add more comfort and upscale equipment; the Platinum stands out with remote tailgate release, unique leather seating, navigation, and adaptive steering.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 6.2-liter gas V8 or a 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. The gas engine makes 385 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel makes 440 horsepower and 925 pound-feet of torque, with a 6-speed automatic and available 4-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The truck includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera setup, a front camera, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system.
• Infotainment: SYNC 3 brings Bluetooth smartphone pairing, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, along with easy-to-read menus and strong usability.
• Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the diesel returned 15.9 miles per gallon, and you can expect roughly 15 miles per gallon even in some real-world use.

Which 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty trim should I buy?

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 5 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-first choice if you want the lowest-cost path into the Super Duty lineup and do not need luxury features.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it balances equipment and price, and it is the trim level highlighted in the source material as the test model.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and more comfort-oriented equipment without jumping all the way to the top end.
• King Ranch: This is the better pick if you want a more distinctive, premium-feeling truck with a stronger luxury lean.
• Platinum: This is the top-end choice if you want the most upscale heavy-duty experience, including remote tailgate release, unique leather seating, navigation, and adaptive steering.

The safety content emphasizes the truck’s mirrors, cameras, airbags, traction control, and SOS post-crash alert system, which are useful across the lineup.

• Inventory: There are 2,363 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty's resale value?

The current average of $33,346 sits slightly below last year's $34,883.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example with strong equipment and a clean history, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell.

Demand should also stay supported by the truck’s strong owner satisfaction and capability-focused reputation. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.15/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty safe?

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty earns 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera for tight parking situations, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. Those features are especially helpful in a truck this large, where visibility and maneuvering matter a lot.

The safety content does not point to a named driver-assistance suite, so you should think of this truck’s safety equipment as visibility- and awareness-focused rather than advanced-driver-assistance-heavy.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.

• The 2017 stands out as an all-new Super Duty with strong capability and modern tech that makes towing and ownership easier.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, modern convenience, and a market that is a bit more buyer-friendly, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-maintained example and be ready to move when you find one below the low end of the range.
