CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 7 Series

Summary
With 498 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,847, 31.5% of 2017 BMW 7 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 7 Series 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 7 Series stands out as a flagship luxury sedan that blends strong performance with a distinctly tech-forward personality. BMW’s long-running emphasis on innovation is a major part of its appeal, and this generation continued that theme with features such as gesture controls, touch-screen capability, a standard rear-view camera, parking sensors, ambient lighting, and an upgraded iDrive system with a voice assistant. It also brought a carbon-fiber-reinforced passenger cell and lighter construction, which helped this generation drop 88 pounds.
For buyers, the 2017 BMW 7 Series offers a wide range of powertrains, from a 325hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six to a 450hp 4.4-liter turbo V8, plus a plug-in hybrid with 325hp and a diesel option in the U.S. The model also includes four-wheel steering on all-wheel-drive versions, adaptive air suspension, active anti-roll bars, and all-wheel steering, reinforcing its mix of comfort and agility. Owners commonly praise its luxurious feel, smooth ride, spacious interior, and advanced safety technology.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 7 Series is known for expensive options, high depreciation, and a poor turning circle, and maintenance costs can be a concern for used buyers. Even so, its combination of rear-seat space, strong engines, and a long list of premium features makes the 2017 BMW 7 Series distinctive among large luxury sedans.

The 7 is here to stay for a long time. A chauffer driven bmw was a dream for a long time before being coveted enough to overrule the long wheelbase sedan class. The extended leg room and the elegant design space yields first-class comfort for passengers. The engine options are quiet and refined. The Audi a8 and the Mercedes E class. BM offers 3 years of complimentary service as standard. Its a great car to be had. Just dont expect your friends and family to appreciate it all that much.

Is the 2017 BMW 7 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a luxurious experience that feels dependable to many owners, along with a smooth ride and strong performance that help the car feel composed over time. At the same time, some reviewers mention high maintenance costs, so your long-term ownership risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about keeping repair and upkeep expenses under control.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 7 Series?
At 54.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury sedan where repair costs can add up quickly. Focus on overall condition, service history, and signs of deferred maintenance so you can avoid a car that looks good on paper but may be expensive to own.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 7 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 505 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.18% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,514, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 7 Series's resale value?
The current average of $19,820 sits slightly below last year's $22,065.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should expect value retention to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Well-kept examples should still attract interest, but the broader trend points to a market that rewards clean, well-documented cars.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 7 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the strongest balance of price, owner satisfaction, and current market availability, the 2017 is a sensible place to focus. It gives you access to a flagship luxury sedan at a lower average price than a year ago, while still delivering the comfort and feature set that make this generation appealing. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and target the best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest badge.
