What’s New for the 2027 BMW 7 Series
The 2027 BMW 7 Series marks the big sedan’s seventh generation, with an updated powertrain lineup, a fresh interior, new infotainment, and an exterior design that aligns more closely with the brand’s current image. BMW is still leaning hard into the polarizing, chubby-cheeked front fascia that flanks the big kidney grille, while inside, the new infotainment system helps the cabin shine. At launch, the 7 Series is available with gas-only and fully electric powertrains, with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions to follow. We cover the electric version, the i7, separately.
Design
With available two-tone paint schemes, thin-spoked wheels, and squared-off front and rear ends, the redesigned BMW 7 Series eschews its former sleekness in favor of a look that shoppers might more closely associate with, say, rivals from a nearby monarchy. Seven standard paint colors are available, though the BMW Individual program opens up a fantastic variety of configurations. The base 740 sedan features 18-inch alloy wheels and there’s a ton of other options in this area, too. Further options include M Sport and M Sport Professional packages with Shadowline trim, exclusive wheel designs, and color-coded brake calipers.
Powertrain
The gas 7 Series 740 features a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine rated at 394 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, available with rear- or all-wheel drive (AWD), while the 760 gets a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with 536 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque. BMW's AWD system, xDrive, is standard on the 760 and the forthcoming 750e xDrive, a plug-in hybrid with an electric motor mated to its turbo-six, combining for 483 hp and 34 miles of all-electric range. The 740i tops out at 28 mpg combined, the 750e is rated for 24 mpg combined, and the 760i drops to 20 mpg combined.
Interior
The 7 Series seats five across its two rows in standard configuration and there is seemingly no end of upholstery choices. Standard synthetic leather can be upgraded to partial or full Merino leather in monochrome or two-tone palettes, or even cashmere. Trim options include polished and open-pore wood, carbon fiber, and several upholstery choices to coordinate with the seating. The Executive Lounge package provides a reclining rear seat with a footrest and massaging functions, neck cushions, and driver-operated power-opening rear doors. Consider, too, the available Panoramic Skylounge LED roof with animated light effects that can sync and coordinate with the cabin’s other ambient lighting. The trunk provides 19.1 cubic feet of cargo space.
Technology
BMW equips the 7 Series with a new 17.9-inch touch screen and a 14.6-inch touch screen for the front passenger, both with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and running BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment software. An 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system is standard, while a 36-speaker system is optional. Other options include wireless charging, a 5G onboard connection, and a 31.3-inch rear-seat theater screen equipped for video calls.
