Germany has perfected the art of the luxury car, as evidenced by the 2026 BMW 5 Series.
The BMW 5 Series is one of three cars that prove the country known for Autobahns, the Nürburgring, and Oktoberfest builds the best luxury sedans on the planet. It competes with the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, each taking a distinct approach to design but measuring up closely in other parameters. The 2026 5 Series is virtually unchanged, entering its third year following a 2024 redesign, and this review is about the 540i xDrive model.
Verdict: Putting BMW’s love-it-or-hate-it design aside, the 2026 540i xDrive is a sensational automobile offering the right blend of luxury, technology, and performance. Choose the M Sport setup for maximum driving enjoyment, or stick with the standard specification to emphasize luxury. Either way, the styling is the most controversial thing about the 5 Series.
BMW has evidently adopted the tenets of Bauhaus design in its latest products, and it shows in the 5 Series. Geometric forms, clean lines, and minimalism rule, but the details can result in jarring juxtapositions.
For example, our 540i test car had the M Sport package, with more expressive bumpers with blacked-out sections. It also had Extended Shadowline trim, blacking out the grille as well. The result was a grinning, gaping, toothless maw of disparate shapes and textures running from the top of the hood to the bottom of the air intake. The Iconic Glow grille illumination didn’t help, making it even more garish.
Inside, the test car’s Copper and Grey Merino leather upholstery looked and felt decadent, adding warmth to the fundamentally cold and businesslike interior. A BMW Curved Display panel spans half the dashboard, containing the digital instrumentation and infotainment displays that provide access to most of the car’s features and functions. The automaker minimizes physical controls as much as possible, and groups them primarily on the center console.
BMW’s approach to the ambient lighting is sensational. It decorates the dashboard, bleeds into the door panels, and adopts a faceted, textured appearance even though the plastic surface is smooth. BMW embeds touch-sensing controls into these lighting strips, further reducing clutter. We must also point out the gorgeous metal speaker grilles of the Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system, patterned to mirror the overall themes found throughout the 540i’s cabin.
The 2026 BMW 5 Series models include the 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring. The BMW 530i and 540i use mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency, the BMW i5 models are all-electric, and the BMW 550e/M5 variants are plug-in hybrids. Prices range from $59,875 to $125,275, including the destination charge and, in the case of the M5 models, a gas-guzzler tax.
Our 540i test car arrived loaded with equipment. In addition to the Oxide Grey paint, Merino leather, and fancy sound system, it had the M Sport, M Sport Professional, Driving Assistance Professional, Executive, and Luxury Seating option packages. Unsurprisingly, the extras bumped the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) to $84,025, including the $1,175 destination charge.
Fortified with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, the 540i xDrive is effortlessly smooth, swift, and civilized. The engine makes 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, bumping to 398 lb-ft when the eBoost 48-volt mild-hybrid system’s electric motor offers assistance. An eight-speed Sport automatic transmission is standard, and the xDrive part of this equation is an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. It’s standard on the 540i, but the base 530i comes standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD).
Variable ratio sport steering is standard, while the optional M Sport package adds firmer suspension and 21-inch wheels with staggered summer performance tires. Better brakes with blue or red calipers are a part of the M Sport Professional package. Our test car had all of those performance upgrades, so it’s no wonder we loved driving it on our favorite ribbons of road draped across the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles. Activate the transmission’s Sport mode, switch to the car’s Sport calibration, and the driving experience is nothing short of exhilarating.
However, so equipped, the 540i still isn’t a hardcore performance sedan. That’s the BMW M5’s role in the 5 Series lineup. Instead, the 540i leans more toward luxury, explaining why the steering remained too light and there was a hint more body motion than we expected—even in the Sport driving mode.
Simultaneously, the M Sport upgrades and oversized wheels aren’t shy about communicating every nuance of the road surface to the driver and passengers, sometimes more firmly than is preferable. Our advice is to avoid potholes, sharper bumps, and cracks if you can help it. Unexpectedly, the upsized brakes weren’t particularly grabby when driving in the city or heavy traffic, making it easier to bring the car to a smooth, clean stop.
Aside from the test model’s busy ride, which you can avoid by sticking with the standard suspension and wheel/tire setup, the 540i is a consummate midsize luxury sedan. Quiet, comfortable, and infused with quality, it’s a great place to spend time no matter the road ahead.
Not only that, but the powertrain is relatively fuel efficient, especially given the level of performance. The EPA says it should return 28 mpg in combined driving, and we averaged 26.5 mpg on our Southern California testing loop.
Wrapped in supple leather and featuring heating and ventilation, the test car’s front seats offered hours of fatigue-free support during a day trip to California’s Central Coast. They did not have a massage function, but we didn’t miss it. If there is a comfort-related complaint, it pertains to the lack of padding on the sides of the center console, where a leg resting there can become sore after a while.
The rear seats are equally comfortable, though people with longer legs won’t like how their shins contact the hard plastic on the bottom of the front seatback panel. The seat is perfect, offering proper leg and back support and striking us as a perfect place for napping. The bottom cushion was also heated, and the test car had rear side window shades (including separate ones for the quarter windows) and a power sun blind for the back window.
Storage space is adequate, but if you like to have an oversized water bottle with you at all times, there’s nowhere to put it. Smartphone storage is available front and rear, and the front seatbacks include Travel and Comfort multi-function attachment brackets with USB-C connectivity for personal entertainment. Rear passengers do not get their own climate control panel, though.
Open the trunk, and you’ll discover what BMW claims is an 18.4 cubic-foot cargo area. We’re unsure how the automaker established that measurement, because when you load a full-size suitcase into the trunk, the space doesn’t appear to be that large. Since the 48-volt mild-hybrid tech and a compact spare tire live underneath the load floor, the trunk’s height isn’t tall. But the distance from the lid to the back seat is deep, so perhaps that’s where the extra volume is.
As expected, the 2026 5 Series is loaded with technology accessible through the BMW Curved Display that dominates the upper portion of the dashboard. It houses a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display; BMW Operating System 8.5 is the software that powers it.
Cloud connectivity provides access to a navigation system, a digital voice assistant, and connected service packages. In addition, the 5 Series includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. Our test car had the optional Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system, complete with gorgeous metal speaker grilles on all four door panels.
The more time you spend using the BMW Curved Display and its various interaction methods, the more comfortable you’ll be with the technology. Fortunately, anyone familiar with a modern smartphone should find the learning curve shallow and short. Also, the latest BMW OS 8.5 has a home screen showing the navigation map, current entertainment selection, and the connected phone, and the natural voice recognition system is quite capable. Therefore, physical interaction with the display is typically limited to calling up the menu of shortcuts to specific features.
During the voice recognition test, the digital voice assistant failed in two common instances across most BMWs. When we told the assistant, “Hey, BMW, I need to go to a hospital!” the first two choices were located in Mexico. A request for directions to the street address of the White House resulted in routing to 1600 Pigeon Hollow in Idaho, right across the state line from Farmington, Washington.
Otherwise, the voice assistant performed near flawlessly. You can use it to lower the windows, raise the rear sun blind, turn on the heated steering wheel, activate the ventilated front seats, and more. The test car’s head-up display also impressed us, conveying plenty of information to help us remain focused on the road ahead.
In addition, the test car’s high-resolution surround-view camera system was outstanding, and the parking sensors alter their tone and urgency the closer the 5 Series is to another object. Combine this tech with a remarkably tight turning radius (despite our test cars’s 21-inch wheels and tires), and you can tuck the 540i into spaces you might otherwise think would be impossible.
When you upgrade from the 530i to the 540i, you get the more powerful and refined turbo six engine and standard AWD, but also more safety features. This version of the 5 Series has adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, and together they create an Assisted Driving system.
Our test car had the Driving Assistance Professional option package. It adds steering-related driver assistance features governing lane changes and supporting evasive maneuvers, and an emergency stop system that can bring the car to a safe halt if the technology detects an unresponsive driver.
Highway Assistant is also part of that package, but was inactive in the test vehicle. That’s unfortunate, because Highway Assistant provides hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph. We’ve used this technology in other BMWs, and it works just as well as Cadillac Super Cruise, and is equally clear about its operational status. BMW says Highway Assistant is pre-paid for eight years of service, and requires renewal after that period.
In crash-test evaluations, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 5 Series high marks, but at the time of publication it hadn’t subjected this model to the full battery of tests necessary to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not released any crash-test ratings for the 2026 5 Series at the time of publication.
The 2026 BMW 5 Series is priced right compared to other midsize luxury cars, and it comes with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which aligns with common lease contract terms. The attractive and expressive Genesis G80 offers that same perk, and starts at a lower price. The relatively bland Mercedes-Benz E-Class is more expensive and doesn’t include free maintenance visits.
Not only is the 5 Series fairly priced, but it also offers impressive fuel economy. For perspective, a Kia K4 with a 190-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive (FWD) is rated at 29 mpg combined, while the 375-hp, turbo-six, AWD, BMW 540i xDrive earns a rating of 28 mpg. How, exactly, does that make any sense?
As can always be said about a BMW, if you like the way it looks, chances are you’ll like most everything else about the 2026 5 Series. And we definitely recommend the upgrade from the 530i to the 540i for its extra measure of refinement, sophistication, and effortless speed.
