What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Avalon?

At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s features and trim level match the listing description.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base XLE Plus includes dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, heated mirrors, auto headlights, keyless entry and ignition, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The XLE Premium adds navigation, a premium Entune system, a 9-speaker stereo, driver memory settings, wireless smartphone charging, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. The Limited adds tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic wipers, xenon headlights, ambient lighting, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system.
• Powertrain: The Avalon Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack for a combined 200 hp. It is rated at 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, and the hybrid setup is tuned for efficiency with a healthy low-end push.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense adds a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, auto high-beam adjust, and dynamic radar cruise control. It is optional rather than standard on the Limited trim.
• Infotainment: The Avalon’s Entune system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone-app integration. The XLE Premium adds navigation and a 9-speaker stereo, while the Limited upgrades to the JBL premium system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Avalon Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, and the test-drive notes also cite a 40 mpg combined figure.

Which 2016 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon is offered in 3 trim levels: XLE Plus, XLE Premium, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XLE Plus: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the Avalon’s core comfort and convenience features without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the essentials, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and keyless access, so it makes sense if you want a well-equipped starting point.
• XLE Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds navigation, a better Entune system, a 9-speaker stereo, wireless charging, memory settings, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the strongest mix of features and price, this is the trim to focus on.
• Limited: This is the luxury pick, with tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, xenon headlights, ambient lighting, and the JBL 11-speaker audio system. Choose it if you want the most upscale Avalon experience.

Toyota Safety Sense is optional on the Limited, so check whether a specific listing includes it.

What is the 2016 Toyota Avalon's resale value?

The current average of $16,811 sits slightly above last year's $16,434.

That upward move suggests the Avalon is holding value reasonably well for a used sedan in this segment. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, the current pricing trend gives you a decent foundation for future resale.

Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand on the used market. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Avalon safe?

The 2016 Toyota Avalon earns a Good rating from IIHS, and it earns four-star ratings in frontal crashes and rollover tests from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in the other NHTSA categories referenced in the test notes.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is the named driver-assistance suite, and it adds a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, auto high-beam adjust, and dynamic radar cruise control. Standard safety equipment also includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, and 10 airbags.

One caveat from the test-drive notes is that braking distance is a little over 130 feet from 60 mph, which is slightly below the class average.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Prices are up 2.29% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The year brings a fresh face, redesigned lighting, and a refreshed Entune system, while the Avalon Hybrid also stands out for its impressive owner-retention and efficiency.

The bottom line: The 2016 Avalon makes sense if you want a comfortable, well-liked used sedan with strong owner satisfaction and a solid feature set. If you’re price-sensitive, you can still shop this year carefully because the market has enough inventory to compare options, but the best examples are worth moving on quickly when they appear.
