Why it stands out
The 2016 Honda Civic stands out by moving beyond the old image of being merely thrift-focused and dependable. According to its test-drive summary, this all-new Civic takes bold chances in elevating small-car fashion, refinement, and build quality, and it succeeds. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished and more modern than the Civic’s traditional reputation might suggest.
It also keeps the qualities that have long made the Civic attractive, including thrift and dependability, while packaging them in a very small, fun-to-drive form. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, stylish design, and high safety ratings. A few owners did note that its height can make it harder to get in and out, which is a useful reminder that its strengths in style and efficiency come with some everyday tradeoffs.

Great car in good conditions, easy to maintain, and runs really well.

The 2016 Honda EX is a wonderful car. The MPG is great combined with the durability of a Honda. I upgraded from a 2002 Civic EX and got my last one up to 199K miles (only performing standard maintenance checkups). 100% worth the value, and I would recommend these cars to anyone.

Love, love, love my Hondas and this one is no different. Drives so smoothly and the hatchback is very handy. Would definitely recommend.

I love the smoothness of the drive. I love the size; I can zip in and out of any parking space. The real deal breaker for me was the left hand lane warning mirror. I do wish it was a little higher from the ground. I do struggle a little bit to get in and out.

How much does the 2016 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,949 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,345.59 |
| Year-Round High | $14,375.83 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,373 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.95% |
Prices have softened 2.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,549 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $13,345.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — 4.86/5. It earns an expert rating of 8/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, and stylish design. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a compact car that feels more polished and modern than the Civic’s older reputation, while still keeping the thrift and dependability you want in a used commuter. With 24.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience, and the expert summary reinforces the Civic’s long-term dependability. The driving notes also describe it as a car you can count on for a smooth, composed commute, while the cost-effectiveness commentary supports the idea that it delivers a lot of value for the money. Honda also includes a first scheduled maintenance visit on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Civic’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?
At 45.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body alignment, panel fit, and signs of repair quality, since condition matters more when you’re shopping a model with a mixed accident history. It also helps to compare trim equipment carefully so you know whether the car you’re considering has the features you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Touring trim stands out with chrome door handles and roofline accents, polished two-tone 17-inch wheels, full LED lighting, and a cleaner, more upscale cabin presentation. Lower trims will not match that level of visual polish or equipment, so you should check whether the car you’re considering has the features you want before assuming it does.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque on the lower trims, while the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder makes 174 hp and 162 lb-ft on the higher trims. A 6-speed manual is limited to the base LX, and the other trims use a CVT.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim, while for the coupe it is only on the Touring.
- Infotainment: The system uses an Android-based interface with customizable screens, Garmin navigation, live traffic, pinch-to-zoom capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT-equipped models are rated at 31 mpg city and 42 highway, while the manual LX gets 27/40. Over 300 miles, the test vehicle averaged close to 37 mpg.
Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics with the 2.0-liter engine and the manual transmission if you want it. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least feature-rich choice.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you into the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a more appealing overall equipment mix without jumping all the way to the top. If you want the strongest balance of price and content, this is the one to focus on first.
- EX-T: This trim adds the turbocharged powertrain and sits above the EX, so it is worth considering if you want more of the higher-output setup and are willing to pay for it.
- EX-L: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to spend more for it. It sits closer to the luxury end of the lineup than the value end.
- Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with the most upscale look and the strongest feature set, including the full LED lighting and the most premium cabin presentation. Choose it if you want the nicest Civic in this group and are comfortable paying for it.
Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim, while on the coupe it is only on the Touring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop, but the best listings still move quickly.
- Deal availability: 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,549 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 45.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,345.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $13,949 sits slightly below last year's $14,373.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example and avoid overpaying, you give yourself a better chance of limiting your loss later. Strong demand for efficient, reliable compact cars also helps keep this Civic relevant in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?
The 2016 Civic sedan earns five-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk, and the Civic sedan and coupe are both rated Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS with Good scores in all five crash tests and a Superior rating for crash avoidance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is standard on every sedan trim, while on the coupe it is limited to the Touring. The backup camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.
Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a major step up in refinement, styling, and build quality over earlier Civics.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,229, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,949 average.
- It is a straightforward, well-rounded compact that emphasizes reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, quality, and value.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern, more polished Civic and can stretch to the 2016’s market price, that is the stronger all-around choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better budget play and still delivers the core Civic strengths you care about.
