CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Honda Civic
overall

Summary
With 222 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $13,887, 36.0% of 2016 Honda Civics for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Honda Civic stands out by moving beyond the old image of being merely thrift-minded and dependable. According to the test-drive summary, this all-new Civic takes bold chances in elevating small-car fashion, refinement, and build quality, and it succeeds. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished and more distinctive than the Civic’s traditional reputation might suggest.
It also keeps the qualities that have long made the Civic attractive, including thrift and dependability, while packaging them in a very small, fun-to-drive form. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, stylish design, and high safety ratings. A few owners did note that its height can make it harder to get in and out, which is worth considering for shoppers who prioritize easy entry and exit.

Great car in good conditions, easy to maintain, and runs really well.

The 2016 Honda EX is a wonderful car. The MPG is great combined with the durability of a Honda. I upgraded from a 2002 Civic EX and got my last one up to 199K miles (only performing standard maintenance checkups). 100% worth the value, and I would recommend these cars to anyone.

Love, love, love my Hondas and this one is no different. Drives so smoothly and the hatchback is very handy. Would definitely recommend.

I love the smoothness of the drive. I love the size; I can zip in and out of any parking space. The real deal breaker for me was the left hand lane warning mirror. I do wish it was a little higher from the ground. I do struggle a little bit to get in and out.

| Year-Round Low | $13,344 |
| Year-Round High | $14,287 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,284 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.41% |
Prices have softened 2.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,551 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Honda Civic earns a 4.86/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, stylish design, and high safety ratings. That lines up well with the Civic’s role as a compact car that feels more polished and distinctive than the usual small-car choice, while still staying practical for everyday use.
With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a strong value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the summary also highlights the car’s smooth drive and impressive fuel economy, which often go hand in hand with low-stress ownership. The expert summary reinforces that this Civic keeps the thrift-and-dependability formula that has long defined the nameplate, while packaging it in a more refined, modern design.
The performance write-up also describes the car as a dependable, easygoing daily driver with linear power delivery and a well-balanced chassis. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s core reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?
At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or panel replacement. Focus on signs of uneven wear, repair quality, and whether the car still feels tight and well sorted on the road.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The sedan lineup spans LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, and Touring. The base LX is the most stripped-down choice, while higher trims add more upscale presentation, stronger equipment, and features such as the cleaner interior design, LED lighting, and the more premium Touring treatment.
- Powertrain: The lineup uses two four-cylinder engines: a 2.0-liter with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque on the lower trims, and a turbocharged 1.5-liter with 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque on the higher trims. The base LX gets a 6-speed manual, while the rest use a CVT.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim, but on the coupe it is limited to the Touring.
- Infotainment: The system uses an Android-based interface with customizable screens, Garmin navigation, voice input, pinch-to-zoom capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Touring trim also adds a customizable digital instrument panel.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT-equipped models are rated at 31 mpg city and 42 highway, while the manual LX gets 27/40.
Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Civic without chasing extras. It gets the 2.0-liter engine and the manual transmission, so it suits you best if you value simplicity and want to keep the purchase price down.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you into the more desirable turbocharged 1.5-liter engine while keeping the Civic’s core strengths intact. If you want the sweet spot between price, performance, and everyday comfort, this is the one to focus on.
- EX-T: This trim adds the turbocharged engine and more equipment, making it a good fit if you want a stronger feature set without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- EX-L: This is the choice if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it. It builds on the higher-trim formula with a more premium ownership experience.
- Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with the richest presentation and the most advanced tech and comfort features. It makes sense if you want the nicest Civic and are willing to pay for it.
Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim, which makes it easier to get the full safety suite without moving to the top of the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,551 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 45.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,344, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $13,940 sits slightly below last year's $14,284.
That tells you the market has eased, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper what you recover later if you sell soon. The current price trend suggests the Civic is holding value reasonably well, but not aggressively appreciating.
If you plan to resell in a few years, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot. A clean, well-kept example should remain easier to move than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?
The 2016 Honda Civic earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. On the sedan, you can get that package on every trim, which is a major advantage if safety tech matters to you. The coupe limits it to the Touring trim.
The backup camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot. That said, you should still treat the driver-assistance systems as support tools rather than substitutes for attentive driving.
Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The all-new redesign brings a more refined look, better build quality, and stronger safety credentials.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,216, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,940 average.
- It focuses on reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, quality, and value.
The bottom line: If you want the more polished, better-equipped Civic with stronger style and safety appeal, the 2016 is the better target. If your priority is spending less and you’re comfortable giving up some refinement and newer features, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path.
