How much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?

Prices have softened 5.68% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,811 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, and handling, and they also like its stylish design and value compared with similar cars. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a classic-looking performance car with updated tech and a broad mix of appearance and performance packages.

With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels fun, smooth, and dependable enough to keep buyers happy over time, with many praising its value and overall driving experience. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that the Mustang is a modernized, more capable version of the classic pony car, which supports confidence in everyday use.

Ford also highlights a strong safety and convenience package, including standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s core appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not modified heavily.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment and features still work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base car comes with 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey, while higher trims add features like power front seats, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and Sync 3.
• Powertrain: You can shop V6, turbocharged four-cylinder, and V8 versions, with the V6 rated at 300 hp and the EcoBoost at 310 hp; the V8 is the strongest choice if you want the most power.
• Safety package: Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while all Mustangs can add front and rear parking sensors.
• Infotainment: Sync 3 arrives on the EcoBoost Premium with an 8-inch touchscreen, and the upgraded system is quicker and more usable than the older setup.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 17 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the manual, while the EcoBoost is rated as high as 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway depending on transmission; the V8 trades efficiency for power at 15 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.

Here's the short version:

• V6: This is the value play if you want Mustang style and strong standard equipment without stretching the budget, since it already brings 300 hp and a solid feature set.
• EcoBoost: Choose this if you want the turbo-four’s lighter feel and stronger efficiency, especially if you care more about balanced daily driving than V8 sound.
• EcoBoost Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Sync 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, leather, heated and ventilated seats, and more comfort features.
• GT: Pick this if you want the V8 experience and are willing to give up some premium comfort features to get it.
• GT Premium: This is the right choice if you want the V8 plus the nicer cabin and feature set, and it’s the trim that pairs best with the California Special package.

Premium Mustangs are also the trims that can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,811 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.68% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,381, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?

The current average of $18,592 sits slightly below last year's $19,712.

That softer pricing suggests the Mustang has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to own it for a while. For a future seller, the current market shows that value is still tied closely to condition, trim, and how well the car has been cared for.

Because the average price is below last year’s level, you may have less downside risk than a buyer who paid closer to the prior-year average. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected or heavily modified ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?

The 2016 Ford Mustang earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top rating of Good and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags help anchor the safety story. Ford also offers adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning on Premium Mustangs, while front and rear parking sensors are available across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.68% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Sync 3, new appearance packages, and broader trim and feature variety.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $19,599, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $18,592 average.
• It was a redesigned anniversary-year Mustang with broad appeal and strong dynamic improvement.

The bottom line: If you want the better shopping value, the 2016 is the stronger pick because prices have eased and the feature mix is broader. If you’re comparing carefully and find a clean 2015 at the right price, it can still make sense, but the 2016 gives you the better balance of value, tech, and selection.

How does the 2016 Ford Mustang compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro?

Our experts score the 2016 Ford Mustang 7.5/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 7.3/10.

The Mustang gives you the lower average used price and more listings to shop, while the Camaro brings stronger city and highway MPG figures in the comparison table. If you want the better value and broader inventory, the Mustang has the edge; if efficiency matters more, the Camaro is the more frugal choice.
