Is the 2014 Dodge Durango a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.5/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7.5/10. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, comfort, and quality materials, and they also like the smooth operation of the Uconnect system. The Durango’s roomy cabin and refined feel make it a strong fit if you want a three-row SUV that balances family usefulness with a more upscale, tech-forward personality.

The market also shows 27.6% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for comfort, spaciousness, and the kind of cabin quality you can count on over time. The expert review also describes the Durango as rugged and durable, with a solid, composed feel on rough roads.

At the same time, the ownership picture is tempered by unfavorable reliability and cost-of-ownership expectations, along with reports of engine and climate control concerns. For used buyers, that means long-term risk is worth taking seriously, especially if you’re planning to keep the SUV for many years.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Dodge Durango?

At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the SUV has been maintained consistently, since ownership costs and reliability are key concerns with this model year.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT Plus adds a 12-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio, while the Limited adds leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, dual USB charging ports, a 115-volt outlet, an upgraded sound system, remote engine start, a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, and a universal garage door opener. The R/T adds a 5.7-liter V8, performance steering, a sport-tuned suspension, heavy-duty brakes, 20-inch wheels, a premium sound system, and a power tailgate. The Citadel adds premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, navigation, a cargo net, a cargo cover, bi-Xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and extra chrome trim.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and the available 5.7-liter V8 adds more power and raises towing capacity to 7,400 pounds. The 8-speed automatic helps the SUV feel smooth and responsive, and Eco mode is tuned to conserve fuel.
• Safety package: Trailer Sway Control is standard for all models. The Limited can be upgraded with rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection. That system is also available on the R/T and Citadel, bundled with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
• Infotainment: The Durango uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 8.4, and Uconnect Access adds real-time traffic and weather, gas-station search, movie listings, sports scores, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and emergency calling. The system is described as easy to use, with responsive controls and a sensible layout.
• Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 18.2 mpg, and the EPA estimate for the AWD test vehicle was 19 mpg combined.

Which 2014 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?

The 2014 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT Plus, Limited, R/T, Citadel.

Here's the short version:

• SXT Plus: This is the entry point if you want the Durango’s core space and capability with a few comfort upgrades, including the power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio. It’s the trim to consider if you want to keep costs down and can live without the richer equipment found higher up.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the biggest everyday upgrades: leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, remote start, and useful parking and visibility features. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort, tech, and convenience, this is the one to target.
• R/T: Choose this if you want the sportier Durango, since it brings the 5.7-liter V8, performance steering, sport-tuned suspension, heavy-duty brakes, and a more aggressive look and feel. It makes sense if driving character matters more to you than value.
• Citadel: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with premium leather, ventilated front seats, navigation, a sunroof, and additional exterior polish. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Durango experience and are willing to pay for it.

Safety-package note: the Blind-Spot Monitoring system with Rear Cross-Path Detection is available on the Limited and also on the R/T and Citadel, where it is bundled with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Dodge Durango?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 617 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,438, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Dodge Durango's resale value?

The current average of $10,517 sits slightly below last year's $11,319.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work against you if you’re planning to sell soon. On the other hand, it may help you buy at a more favorable entry point today.

For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the Durango’s value has already adjusted downward, so holding it longer may not reverse that trend quickly. If you buy carefully and maintain it well, you can help protect your position, but you should still expect resale to be shaped by the model’s weaker ownership-cost reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Dodge Durango safe?

The 2014 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Durango includes Ready Alert Braking, Rain Brake Support, and Trailer Sway Control as standard equipment. Uconnect Access also adds an emergency-call function through the rear-view-mirror button. Available driver-assistance features include a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.

The main caveat is that the IIHS small-overlap frontal-impact test had not been assessed at the time of the review, so you should keep that in mind when comparing it with newer rivals.

Should I buy a 2014 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its roomy cabin, smooth Uconnect system, and a refined, technologically sophisticated feel that broadens its appeal beyond the Durango’s rugged image.

The bottom line: The 2014 is a good choice if you want a used Durango with strong owner satisfaction, a roomy interior, and a softer price than last year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this model year can make sense now, but you should be disciplined about history checks and condition because reliability and ownership-cost concerns remain part of the equation.
