electric motor noise after start

Asked by cessna177b Apr 19, 2013 at 01:47 PM about the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 1.8T FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The transmission was replaced and now I have a sound after start up that sounds like a
electric motor running. It lasts about ten seconds and seems to be coming from under the
dash.. This car does not have electric mirrors. What do you think it could be

There should be a HVAC blower motor but you would know that sound. It could be some sort of warning buzzer or maybe a relay cycling. It could be the starter motor hanging up. If it happens after every start, get people to listen to it. An experienced mechanic might be able to identify it.

It could be that some of the sound-deadening material under the car was removed during the transmission install and you're hearing the fuel pump build pressure in the injection system. The sound would be funneled forward through the center body channel. Either way, I would take it back to the mechanic and insist they inspect the installation....better safe than sorry.

If it's only when the engine is cold it's most likely the SAI (secondary air injection) kicking in and then turning off. Helps with emissions while the catalytic converter is still cold. Usually stays on 10-20 seconds after start up. This is normal.

ARE YOU SURE THAT WHAT YOUR HEARING ISNT FROM THE THROTTLE BODY? THEY DO HAVE A SMALL ELECTRIC MOTOR ON THEM THAT OPENS AND CLOSES THE THROTTLE VALVE. THEY DO SOUND LIKE A HUMMING AND ONLY LAST ABOUT 7 OR 8 SECONDS.
