I accidently tried to switch my 1997 Ford expedition into 4 Low while it was in REVERSE instead of NEUTRAL, now suv stuck in NEUTRAL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can't get SUV t move now. The car was in AWD, and then I put it in REVERSE and moved dial to  4 wheel low. Now dial will show AWD, but will not go into 4W HIGH OR LOW. When try and put it in PARK it makes a grinding noise. What did I break and how do I fix it?

the park pall engages to a toothed gear on the trans mainshaft. near the tail, if it grinds while running it is trying to engage a moving mainshaft that if connected would be driving the truck. now did you split the rear shaft yoke at the trans, or snap a rear axel, jack it up and see what's moving with a helper holding brake ,watch it checking this stuff can be dangerous if your not familiar

Your still in 4 wheel drive. start the vehicle put in neutral, and put in reverse, go back at least 10 feet, then stop, and put it in neutral., make a complete stop switch it slowly, from what gear you where in to 2h. Then put it back to drive you should be fine., this works for 4406 transfer case. Good 4 wheeling driving.
