1998 Windstar made a loud pop at startup

Asked by Oct 12, 2013 at 04:37 AM about the 1998 Ford Windstar 3 Dr LX Passenger Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Started my Windstar and a loud pop came out of the engine. It wouldn't start right away and when it did it revved really high and then dropped low and almost died. When I put it in gear, it increased speed without pressing the accelerator. While braking, it struggled to slow down. What is the problem?

The pop could have been a backfire through the intake, it may have damaged the ISC motor or damaged the throttle plate. Is the check engine light on? If it is then get the codes pulled and write then down, most auto parts stores will do this for free, then repost them here and someone will help you with further diagnostics, if the light is not on then open a window, disconnect the negative battery cable, turn on the headlight switch, wait at least 30 seconds, turn off headlight switch, reconnect battery cable and start engine and roadtest to see if problem has been cured.
