Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My hyandai Sonata starting going through oil like crazy
with under 70k miles, it would go through 3 quarts at least
before the next 3k pill change. At this time we had been
averaging 380-410 miles per fill up. We were asked to
document weekly for the next month or 3000 mile period
to determine how much oil was bring used, which again
didn't last and had to put another quart of oil in engine
before it ran dry. With a extended warranty we were able to
get approved for a new engine, a month later and months
of arguing with dealership that there was something
wrong they replaced it. Here's the crazy part, a few weeks
to a month later we noticed with fill up we were only
getting 220 miles per fill up and when it gauge showed
about a third to a quarter of gas left the miles per empty
would go blank?????? The dealer ship took the car again
and for a month looked for codes and nothing came up,
nothing fixed told us the engine needed to be broke in. A
friend that week while helping us look found a broken air
intake house that went to 3 different places like the
Master cylinder, engine block etc. With a so called new
engine and averaging nearly half of the miles before what
could be the problem, please please give me some
ideas.....

Are we talking about oil consumption, fuel consumption, or both? I'm confused!! The oil consumption is very excessive! To the point where it has to be leaking! If the engine was burning that much oil you'd know it by the blue smoke from the tailpipe! As for the gasoline mileage, do the math yourself for a few fill ups. Either the gas gauge or the MPG computer may not be working correctly. Good old fashioned paper and pencil will tell the true story!! Hope that helps! Jim

Thanks for responding, the oil consumption was taken care of after receiving a new engine. But since that was replaced 4 months ago, it would run rich, putter at times, but worse the mileage upon fill up registered 150 miles than we averaged before. Also when the gas dial is about a 1/4 from empty the digital display will not show how many miles until empty. We did notice a broken air hose which has been fixed, but still reading low.

Have the automatic transmission checked to be sure it's upshifting like it should. If it's not, that will greatly reduce fuel economy. If you have a tachometer pay attention to the engine RPMs, especially at cruising speed. At about 50 to 60 MPH the tachometer should be around 1100 to about 1900 RPMs. If it's reading considerably higher that's where your gas mileage is going. Hope that helps! Jim
