2002 Mercury cougar 2.5L v6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car was running fine then I
noticed one day that as I started
to gain speed then my car gave a
knock I could feel in my gas
pedal. I thought notice of it &
continued driving around.
Sometimes it would ride real
smooth & at other times it was as
if it was misshifting & not
catching all gears. One day at a
stop light my car went from full
strength power to frozen. I had to
push my car off the road. I figure
let it cool then try going again but
my car didn't want to move at all.
I had it towed home where I then
dealt with the issue a day later. I
tried starting it up the very next
day & it had no problem going in
reverse but when I tried any other
gear then it just jerked me
forward just a little. What could
be the issue? My OBD READER
gave me code p0171. Please any
