2004 mazda mpv check engine light on.told charcoal canister. What is that?

A canister that is part of the fuel system, that cleans the vented air from the fuel tank and filler neck. Over time if you constantly overfill the fuel tank, raw fuel will seep down the air hose into the canister rendering it useless. Your issue might be just the hose is cracked or popped off.
