I have a 1998 Escort LX Seadan that seems to have front end problem.
The car makes a solid clunking noise when I hit bumps. It has new struts, brakes and tires and the noise didn't change. It has also started to shudder when I back out of parking space if I don't give it a bit of gas. The car has 217 thousand miles and I have owned it from new so I know it has not been wrecked .I had one guy look at it and he was left shaking his head and told me not to worry to much about it since the noise started at around 100 thousand miles and was not causing any major problems. does anyone have any suggestions as to what it may be as I am hoping to drive it another100 thousand or more miles. Oh yea, it has a fairly new clutch and timing belt I had both put in at 200 thousand miles .
The clunks when hitting bumps might be a motor or trans mount. Check your exhaust brackets too. Backing out and shuddering is probably internal trans related and or could be related to the trans mount being loose or broken. Have your mechanic inspect them.
