Starter will not engage when ignition is turned.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1995 chevy ck1500's (w/ 350) starter occasionally (This problem has
increased in the last few months.) will not turn over. All I hear is the
solenoid click each time I turn the ignition. Sometimes I can get it to start
within seconds by repeatedly turning the ignition. Other time I may have to
repeat this process for several minutes. If I have someone with me from
now on I will try using the hammer on starter technique. What is the
likelyhood of it being a bad starter as opposed to a solenoid or wiring
issue? Thanks.

Could be a bad solenoid or a starter judging by it's age, the contact ring tends to pit each time the key is turn to crank position and over time the pitting is just too much and the contact is broken, the starter has brushes and they tend to wear down with normal use, when they wear down to a certain point they start to arc when that happens the arching causes pitting on the armature contact segments, too much pitting and no contact so the starter won't run. Thats why it is advisable to replace both the starter and solenoid as a unit.
